Title: Moving to SSD soon
Post by: DanskDreng on July 29, 2018, 04:57:51 am
Hi Peppermint lovers. I never did a snapshot yet from system so I'm not sure how it is working. My question is if there is any possibility to make a snapshot, save it as file on usb and then load it from the new os instalation on SSD?

You could use Timeshift which is available in the package manager.  It takes a snapshot of the system files only (i.e. it doesn't include your home directory).

You can then copy the snapshot to a USB drive.

To restore, you would have to do a new install of Peppermint, install timeshift then restore the snapshot from the USB drive.

Sorry if it will sound like stupid question. I really don't have experience with Timeshift, but it won't include the desktop style like how I set up the panels and so on, or?

Its not a stupid question and I can't say for sure as I haven't used it to restore from a new install.  I do believe it restores everything including desktop style but would wait for someone else to confirm who may have a better idea.

If timeshift doesn't copy the home folder then no .. the configs for the user specific appearance customisations are in the home folder.

Wouldn't cloning the drive be a better bet ?

Agree cloning would be a better idea.  Have just had a look at time shift and under settings, filters there is the option to include the home folder so that may be a solution if you wanted to do it that way
