Title: WiFi suddenly stopped working (SOLVED)
Post by: amlc on July 24, 2018, 08:52:58 am
Hello! I've been experiencing some problems with my WiFI since yesterday. I've already reseted my router and rebooted my PC. If I boot to a Live PeppermintOS USB, WiFi works pretty well.

Here are some outputs from commands you might find useful:
Code: [Select]

Hi amic,

was it working before an update- could it be a kernel problem

have you tried going back to the 4.15.0-23 kernel

Regards Zeb...

could you post the result from
Code: [Select]
dmesg | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail"

Which driver are you using?  If you click on settings, additional drivers, does the driver appear there?

Hello Zeb. I've just rebooted using 4.13.0 and my Wifi is working again. Thanks for your help. Do you have any idea why 4.15.0-29 has that problem?

Best regards, Mateo.

It can happen at any time, it is just a driver regression.

Keep chatting with TonyBronze. He will probably get you working on the latest kernel.

Regards Zeb...

Can you open synaptic package manager (menu>system>synaptic package manager.)

Click on settings then repositories, click on the other software tab and make sure there is a tick in the box next to "Canonical Partners"

Then type in the search box "broadcom" , right click on b43-fwcutter and click on mark to install (if it asks to install other drivers as well, select okay)

Then click on apply

When done, exit Synaptic Package Manager, reboot and see if it is working.

Post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and if neccessary (to install the right wireless drivers) are you able to connect via an ethernet cable ?

FWIW... the  4.15.0-29 kernel broke my desktop's WiFi too... I elected to purge that kernel and wait for the next... hasn't bothered the laptop's WiFI though

Hey TonyBronze, b43-fwcutter is already installed, the repository is checked as well.

PCNetSpec, thanks for replying, here's the output:

Now try
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
It should remove the bcwml-kernel-source so if asked say yes.

Reboot and see if that works

bcmwl-kernel-source is actually the correct driver for 14e4:4727 .. but because it's a source package it'd need recompiling (so purging and reinstalling) after a kernel update.

There is a way around this, use the dkms version

Connect to your router via an ethernet cable, then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential broadcom-sta-dkms
if that driver works, it should automagically recompile when you receive kernel updates

bcmwl-kernel-source rarely works for me even on new installs.  I always remove it and install fwcutter and B43 firmware.  I have 5 dell laptops with Broadcom wi-fi and bcmwl-kernel-source doesn't work on any of them  :'(

Depends on which  broadcom chip you have .. You pretty much can't go wrong in you get the IDvendor:IDdevice string, then compare it to the chart here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/55868/installing-broadcom-wireless-drivers
for the correct driver.

Though any that suggest you use bcmwl-kernel-source, ignore it and use broadcom-sta-dkms instead .. same driver (wl) but rebuilds automatically at kernel updates.

Strange thing is that very often the wi-fi works when you boot with a live USB but after the install, it doesn't work.  Touch wood, what I do has worked so far but that may not always be the case.  Your comments noted and more information stored under my wi-fi, Broadcom notes :)
