Title: How do you customize the desktop and 'theme' of peppermints interface ? (SOLVED)
Post by: iamesperambient on July 23, 2014, 11:39:59 am
I'm curious to give my system a sleek look to it, i would assume you could customize using widgets just unsure
how to do this does anyone know or is there an even simpler way of doing this?

Now that's a HUGE subject right there  :o

DO NOT install "plasma" widgets, they're for the3 KDE desktop environment.

Give us a clue what you're after and we'll try to advise.

Hi iamesperambient, how's it going?  When you say widgets, I am guessing you are referring to Android style phone apps.  The answer to that is no, at least not easily.  Widgets and lightweight distros don't mix well.  You can easily make SSBs with the Ice application though.  I have a few of these on my desktop.  I did make some higher resolution icons because favicons look terrible on the desktop.  You can also customize the lxpanel by adding Panel Applets to it.  First make a backup of the Panel config.  Backups save all the weeping a wailing when it all goes wrong  :D.  Open a terminal window by pressing the combination, Ctrl+Alt+t.  When the terminal opens navigate to where the config file is saved.  Enter the following code into the terminal window.

Tip: To avoid copy/paste errors, use the Code: [Select] function below to highlight.

Code: [Select]
cd ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels
Hit enter and enter the following command into the terminal window:
Code: [Select]
cp panels panels.bak
Hit enter again.  You now have a backup of your current Panel config.

Right click on the panel and select Panel Settings.  Have a play around with panel settings and see what you can come up with.  This is my desktop:

With a little practice you can really make Peppermint yours.  I hope this helps or, at least gives you some ideas.  Good luck and have fun  :)!

Yeah, that's also a good idea.  Have a separate  user account for practice.  That should work well  ;).

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
so we can seee your system spec

Reason I ask .. cairo-dock will be the MOST like the OS X dockbar, but if you're running on a low end system you might be better off with either docky or even plank which are similar but easier on system resources.

(BTW, I think that's Docky in AndyInMokem's piccy)

Yes, that is Docky being used.  It is still  problematic with powering off and hibernate on my machine.  Suspend is totally useless.  Even with the supposed work arounds.  http://forum.pinguyos.com/Thread-How-to-get-docky-to-work-on-14-04-after-suspend-and-laptop-unplug (http://forum.pinguyos.com/Thread-How-to-get-docky-to-work-on-14-04-after-suspend-and-laptop-unplug).  I think that this must work on most machines.  Maybe my Fujitsu Siemens is an oddball.  It is just a heads up about Docky  ;).

Its a known bug.  Having to relaunch it every time I close the lid on my laptop or power off.  After a suspend I have ghost images following the focus.  It is just annoying.  I just hope they manage to fix it because Docky is awesome  8).

Well I reckon your spec should be able to handle Cairo-dock

and most certainly Docky or Plank

which would you like to go with

cairo-dock is the heaviest but does all the stuff the OS X launcher dock does .. like popup folder lists etc.
Docky is next, .. not as configurable as cairo, but lighter
Plank is the gtk version of Docky (so looks the same) .. maybe slightly less configurable than docky, but super light.

Your call
Title: Re: How do you customize the desktop and 'theme' of peppermints interface ?
Post by: iamesperambient on July 23, 2014, 03:21:29 pm
which would be more user friendly for a beginner like me?
and if i change it would it be hard to switch back if i ended up not liking it?
Title: Re: How do you customize the desktop and 'theme' of peppermints interface ?
Post by: PCNetSpec on July 23, 2014, 03:26:23 pm
Probably docky

and it's easy to switch back .. al you'll be doing is moving the panel from the normal panel from the bottom of screen to the top, and firing up docky.

So to get back .. close docky, and of you want move the panel back to the bottom.

Ready to go ?

only one way to find out right ?

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install docky
now before starting docky, right click on the bottom panel and select "Panel Settings" and on the "Geometry" tab put the tick in "Top" .. and click "Close" .. your panel should now be at the top of your screen.

Now run:
menu > Accessories > Docky

have fun.

want to add an application launcher .. fire up the app, and whilst its icon is displaying on the dock, right-click the icon and select "pin to dock"

you can re-order the icons by dragging them,

Yes, there is a possibility, as I mentioned before it is a known bug.  The best way to find out is to give it a try.  Its not going to hurt anything.  Its just annoying.   If you do run into these problems, you can always follow the work around link in my previous post.  It obviously works for most computers as I can't find any complaints about it - yet  :D.

Remind me in a day or two and I'll look into this (and see if I can figure out a fix/workaround) .. so the problem is docky not coming back after a suspend/resume ?

ya so after i close my laptop docky i have to reload (which isn't a huge deal for me ) but the panel up top all the icons disappear such as the wifi meter power button volume control work spaces etc which forces me to have to restart.

I'm willing to bet that Plank would work properly .. but it won't have some (all?) of the plugins that Docky does.
Title: Re: How do you customize the desktop and 'theme' of peppermints interface ? (SOLVED)

i can give that one a try to maybe i like how this one looks although those bugs are kind of annoying.

Plank looks exactly the same .. it just hasn't got the plugins (AFAIK)

Let me know if you wanna give it a go.

You'll have to figure out how to stop docky from autostarting first (or uninstall it)

To remove docky . close docky, then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt remove docky

Installing plank requires the addition of a PPA, so run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/docky
and hit enter when prompted .. then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install plank

To set plank to autostart run:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/applications/plank.desktop ~/.config/autostart/plank.desktop

HI  iamesperambient

I would go for Cairo Dock (although some night disagree) but so long as your system has the power I find it the easiest to use and by far the most configurable, it also has all the eye candy you're looking for,

I know Mark (our resident guru) considers it a resource hog but to be honest I've never found that and I don't have a particularly powerful PC

Anyway the choice is yours no harm giving Cairo Dock a try and if you don't like it for any reason you can always remove it and never listen to me again :)

as far as widgets are concerned there's an application called Screenlets which I suppose are a kind of widget you'll find it in the repos which allow you to add small applications to your desktop like a clock or weather app etc but to be honest I didn't find any of them worked very well

Anyway Good luck

Graeme

Black outline ? .. have you disabled the compositor (desktop efffects) in the Peppermint Control Centre .. or is this not Peppermint 5 ?

Pretty much all dock bars require a compositor for transparency

Autostarting at bootup should be easily fixable .. for both cairo-dock and docky.

It's whether they come back after resume from suspend that's the problem (at least for docky, not sure about cairo-dock).

The problem with Docky is being caused by another version (3.0) being in the plank PPA .. so we need to remove that PPA

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get purge docky
the
Code: [Select]
sudo apt autoremove
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install ppa-purge
then
Code: [Select]
sudo ppa-purge ppa:ricotz/docky
then when that's done
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install docky
