Title: P'mint 8 32b USB Live wireless works great - but not when installed (SOLVED)
Post by: yulester on January 02, 2018, 04:26:08 pm
Older Acer aspire netbook.

When I use the USB as a live OS, the wireless works great, but after I install, it doesn't work at all.

Connecting to an eclippse jetpack (Verizon)

HI yulester

Welcome to the forum

After a full install it's a good idea to run a system update if you look at your panel you should see a shield symbol if it's coloured blue then it means there are updates available, if you've not already done so I suggest you click on the icon to run an update then see if the WiFi works

Also check if your WiFi is switched on many laptops/netbooks have a WiFi switch which can be turned on & off usually with one of the F keys I know this might sound obvious but it's easy to overlook I have myself

If none of the above work can you post the output of the following

Code: [Select]
lshw -c network
Code: [Select]
ifconfig
Code: [Select]
rfkill list

If I could get wireless, I'd have done the updates.

Yes, The mechanical switch is set for ON.

I will review the command line suggestions when I get home this evening.

What I was wondering is if there may be a difference between what the LIVE configuration uses vs installed.

Yeah fair point  :-[

Do you have an ethernet cable you can connect up to run the updates ?

Not that I'm aware of

Sorry about the delay in replying - - I've been away a few days.

Here are all the terminal requests. Note that during the terminal commands. wireless is showing active at 75%, but web pages will not load, and updates will not function. This is not a connection password issue that I see.

Google came back
5 transmit, 2 received = 60% packet lose - 8236ms

8.8.8.8 came back
5 transmitted. 0 received = 100% lose - 4100ms

Can you connect to your router with an ethernet cable, then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install broadcom-sta-dkms
when that finishes, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod brcmsmac
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe wl
did wireless spring to life ?

If not, try rebooting .. does it work after a reboot ?

Nope -no wired connections. Our only option is the jetpack.

So this still begs the question, why does the live USB work perfectly fine?

No wired connection, okay what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and do you have any way of downloading a file from the internet and transferring it to the Peppermint PC ?

uname - a results

Linux (computer name) 4.10.0-40-generic #44~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Nov 9 15:33:07 UTC 2017 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Yes, we can download onto another Linux machine and do the old proverbial sneaker network.

Okay, download this file:
http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2_i386.deb
and place it on the Desktop of your Peppermint PC

Then open a terminal and run these commands in sequence (to install it)
Code: [Select]
cd ~/Desktop
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2_i386.deb
once that's finished, please REBOOT.

Did wireless spring to life ?

If not, does running
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod brcmsmac
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe wl
make wireless spring to life ?

If not, now what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network

Well Sir - - That worked. Unit went online automatically, and the peppermintos web page kicked up.

I have not done the restart as of yet, but I will do so regardless tonight. We shall see how it goes, but I do believe this was the solution.

I will post a confirmation tomorrow after a startup and short run online.

Great news :) .. let us know how the reboot goes, and hopefully you'll be able to mark this topic (SOLVED) :)

Did updates per the update manager. No issues.

Rebooted this morning and all is working as expected.

As far as I am concerned, this case is considered "SOLVED"

I might also ad that this has been the best Linux forum solution I have encountered in my many years as a user.

PS - I started on early Mandrake.

Cheers yulester, glad we could help :)

You've certainly been around a while if it was still called Mandrake, even longer if it were one of their early releases :o

I'll do this one for you, but in future can you please remember to mark topics (SOLVED) by editing the FIRST posting in your topic and appending (SOLVED) to the 'Subject:' line .. thanks in advance :)
