Title: Peppermint 8 Respin Released
Post by: PCNetSpec on December 07, 2017, 09:03:21 pm
Team Peppermint are pleased to announce the latest iteration of our operating system Peppermint 8 Respin which still comes in 32bit and 64bit versions with the 64bit version having full UEFI and Secureboot support. Whilst a respin is generally a minor release intended as an ISO update, the Peppermint 8 Respin does contain some significant changes.

Peppermint 8 Respin (Peppermint-8-20171130) changes:-
I should probably explain here that some people have suggested the 4.10 kernel series is no longer supported, whilst this may be true for the vanilla kernel please rest assured the Ubuntu 4.10 kernel from the HWE (as used here) is fully supported upstream and will be until you’re automatically rolled onto the 4.13 kernel).

Notes:-

One thing to note is nemo’s new desktop right-click context menu item(s) .. if you right-click the desktop then select “Desktop”, make sure you don’t select both:-
Auto-arrange
and:-
Align to grid
at the same time, or you won’t be able to move any desktop icons .. when both are selected desktop icons are locked in place.
(by default only ‘Align to grid’ is selected)

Other things of note are the default repos now contain these terrific apps from the TeeJee repo:-
So no need to add a PPA.

We'd like to give a massive thanks to all the people that tested the respin prior to release .. Cheers Guys/Gals, you did us proud AGAIN :)

Damn I hate the way everything slows to a crawl on release days :(

Maybe we should look into something like cloudflare for software distribution.

Not sure, but if this was Boxing, I'd be in the Heavyweight class. LoL!  8)

For most boxing organizations, the maximum weight for a cruiserweight is 200 pounds. Thus, a fighter whose weight is over 200 lb (14 st 3 lb, 90 kg) may not fight as anything but a heavyweight.

I verified ISO by gtkhash. The program shows  sha256sum for Peppermint 8 Respin (64 bit) the following:

cff39c61273697c011ebe82f851476938ef2b351d9173f49db64043a19e4ff0d

The value on download page:

8ae0a1585752bb3fe38f4cbe4810c9be029702d6bd77b12efe0a4852edde040a

 :-\ However, md5sums are the same. I tried both direct and torrent downloads. What does it mean, thanks!

I've just fixed that on the main site .. apparently I'd accidentally posted the 32bit SHA256 sum for both ISO's (MD5's were correct) :-[

The checksums are now correct .. thanks for pointing it out :)

Here they are again though:-

Peppermint 8 Respin 64bit

Peppermint-8-20171130-amd64.iso

MD5 = 51137b0f622ee7d44149389e6557e655

SHA256 = cff39c61273697c011ebe82f851476938ef2b351d9173f49db64043a19e4ff0d

Peppermint 8 Respin 32bit

Peppermint-8-20171130-i386.iso

MD5 = 8a2e66ae01fac44b9ee4b421842fae55

SHA256 = 8ae0a1585752bb3fe38f4cbe4810c9be029702d6bd77b12efe0a4852edde040a

Or they can be found here:

big thanks to the "pepp-team"...
i'm on pepp about one year now...
its absolutely awesome...
my #1 distro...  :-*
i love the colourful look (peppermix-dark-7-theme, the new pepirus-theme und the pepp7- and new pepirus-icons, too), hope you will keep it in the next versions, too (btw. the vibrocentric-font, too)...
the lightness (its fast. not full loaded with things i not need and not use. its simple and easy to use)...

o.k., romance-mode = off...  ;)

great job! please keep up the good work!  8)

Thanks very much coyote, great to see you 'get' the Peppermint ethos of not choosing apps for the user and in doing so loading half of them with stuff they don't want or need.

You'd be amazed how many don't 'get' it and moan about us not having much "application" type software included .. if they'd only read the site before downloading they could have saved themselves the time and understood us better :)

Peppermint is what it is, and will remain true to that ethos...

So again, thanks for the kind words and understanding :)

When do you guys think the next LTS will be out for Peppermint. Late next year?
Just curious for planning  purposes ;)

No, Peppermint 9 will be out around May - June (ish) 2018.

Ubuntu release 18.04 in April, and we'll release shortly afterwards .. but only when it's "ready" ;)

That said, ALL Peppermint releases are LTS's because we only base on upstream LTS's .. but if you mean when will the first 18.04 based Peppermint be released, then yeah, May - June (ish) :)

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally just updated my crusty old netbook from Peppermint 7 to Peppermint 8 respin (actually did a re-install rather than an update) and I just wanted to say that I LOVE the new Pepirus theme! Really nicely done, guys. I really appreciate all the work that the dev team puts into this and every Peppermint release.
