Title: What things do you change once Peppermint is installed?
Post by: capngloval on October 17, 2017, 09:01:12 am
The first thing I do is install chrome and remove chromium. I am a netflix user, and there are a few other things that make chrome better for me than chromium. Then I install firefox, followed by htop irssi mc and links, which is my cli toolkit. Then I install virtualbox and teamviewer.

I have also found that arronax is very useful for adding my own programs to the start menu. After making your own desktop file, I just drop it in /home/user/.local/share/applications.

I'm also an astronomy nut, so i install stellarium.

What do you folks do to your peppermint?

I also add xfce4-screenshooter because I think it's the best screenshot solution.

clipit - clipboard manager

openvpn - to set up a certificate authenticated VPN to the Peppermint web servers

grsync + rsync - to automate backups

a ton of package management tools, git, etc.

my personal apps such as Firefox, GIMP, Inkscape, LO, KODI, etc.

Pretty much in that order.

Yeah I'm considering switching to this as the Peppermint default.

1. Update (always #1)
2. Drivers (GPU and CPU)
3. Remove Chromium, install Firefox (Firefox works with Netflix, BTW)
4. Install other software I like, and other personal tweaks

Really, my post install changes aren't a lot, at least not as far as things to remove.  The distro comes pretty barebones, which is a main reason I've always liked it.

Install OWASP Zap

For some reason my brain keeps processing that as "Install OS/2 Warp" ???

The ZAP is (Zed Attack Proxy)
It's a really nice set of tools to test your web application for  security flaws.
OWASP = Open Web Application Security Project --https://www.owasp.org (https://www.owasp.org)

First things first, updates. Then...
1) install firefox
2) remove --purge chromium
3) install vim
4) remove apparmor
5) install plank

Then I move the panel to the top, remove all launchers, add xfce4-battery monitor and make the panel nearly transparent. Add my favourite applications to plank at the bottom of the screen.

Ah! Change to clock to %Y/%m/%d %R
Install libreoffice and reduce swap usage.

Thatís it basically Peppermint is awesome!!

1) Install updates
2) Change theme
3) Install Chrome - Firefox for web browsing
4) get my work softwares : Eclipse - Brackets - Xampp...
5) Get some apps of my preference : Gimp, XfceNote, LIbreOffice, TexMaker, Timeshif...

it's a little time consuming so i generally store the .deb files of nearly all these softwares and  so i can install/update right after installing Peppermint without having to re-download everything.

I wrote a wee script (which Marks help)  that I run after a fresh install so I just run it once, then get myself a coffee it's simple to add or remove programs if anyone wants to use it and add their own software and delete what you don't want

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash
## Script to install my most used applications

echo "This is a script to install applications on a fresh install:"
echo "(1) Continue"
echo "(2) Abort"

read choice

if [ $choice -eq 1 ]
then
clear
echo "Installing packages"
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install -y gigolo \
&& sudo apt-get install -y iptux \
&& sudo apt-get install -y gramps \
&& sudo apt-get install -y virtualbox \
&& sudo apt-get install -y handbrake \
&& sudo apt-get install -y gimp \
&& sudo apt-get install -y libreoffice \
&& sudo apt-get install -y peppermint-networking-pack \
&& sudo apt-get install -y firefox \
&& sudo apt-get install -y shotwell \
&& sudo apt-get install -y pyrenamer \
&& sudo apt-get install -y keepassx \
&& sudo apt-get install -y cairo-dock \
&& sudo apt-get install -y clementine \
&& sudo apt-get install -y baobab \
&& sudo apt-get install -y hplip \
&& sudo apt-get install -y hplip-gui \
&& sudo apt-get install -y thunderbird

else
if [ $choice -eq 2 ]
then
clear
echo "This program will abort"

else
clear
echo "Invalid choice"

fi
fi

echo "End of program"
Just copy and paste in a text editor then make it executable
