Title: Bulk Music File Renaming/Retagging?
Post by: bgkidd1981 on September 15, 2017, 02:35:40 pm
Hi! Does anyone know of a good bulk file renaming app? Preferably one specifically for music files (MP3s) that will work with the files' metadata as well? I've got a ton of audiobook files that I'd love to reorganize before I die of old age. Thanks!

Dunno about "bulk", but maybe look at "easytag" which is in the repos
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install easytag
here's the description from synaptic

Quote
EasyTAG is an utility for viewing, editing and writing
the tags of different audio files, using a GTK+ interface.

Currently EasyTAG supports the following:
 - View, edit, write tags of MP3, MP2 files (ID3 tag), FLAC files (FLAC Vorbis
   tag), Ogg Opus, Ogg Speex and Ogg Vorbis files (Ogg Vorbis tag),
   MP4/M4A/AAC files (MPEG-4 Part 10 tag), and MusePack, Monkey's Audio files
   (APE tag);
 - Auto tagging: parse file and directory names using masks to automatically
   fill in tag fields;
 - Cover art support for all formats;
 - Rename files from the tag fields (using masks) or by loading a text file;
 - Process selected files of the selected directory;
 - Ability to browse subdirectories;
 - Recursion for tagging, removing, renaming, saving, etc;
 - Can set a field (artist, title, ...) on all other selected files;
 - Read file header information (bitrate, time, ...) and display it;
 - Undo and redo last changes;
 - Ability to process tag fields and file names (convert letters into
   uppercase, lowercase, etc);
 - Ability to open a directory or a file with an external program;
 - CDDB support (from http protocol);
 - A tree based browser;
 - A list to select files;
 - A playlist generator window;
 - A file searching window;
 - Simple and explicit interface.

Or as a command line alternative - id3ren

Well... the interface isn't as slick as I would like (I'm doing a lot of clicking!). But it DOES tag and rename files in bulk, so it's getting the job done. Thanks!

No problem, glad it's doing the job (even if it is a bit un-slick) :)

Can't say about audiobooks, but lately I've been using the audio player and metadata editor Quod Libet to edit tags on my music files. I prefer this to easytag. I have some audio files which need to be listened to before editing metadata, and I can do it all in the same application with Quod Libet. I can open multiple browsers, and there's an option to open the folder that contains the file you're looking at as well.

I have yet to find a MP3 Renaming/Retagging app that is better than TagScanner.  This is a Windoz program and will require WINE to get it to run on Peppermint.  I have looked at all the Linux programs that do this and cant find one as good as this.  If your ok with having WINE installed then I would give this a spin.

You can try the Danish too Mp3TAG.  It is for Windows.  I think it runs best under the wine development version.
(It can make mp4 thumbnails which is great for Windows & maybe Apple)

Try is puddletag - is an audio tag editor for GNU/Linux similar to the Windows program Mp3tag.
Features include: Batch editing of tags, renaming files using tags, retrieving tags from filenames, using Actions to automate repetitive tasks, importing your music library and loads of other awesome stuff. Supported formats: id3v1, id3v2 (.mp3), AAC (.mp4, .m4a), VorbisComments (.ogg, .flac) and APEv2 (.ape) :
