Title: Peppermint won't install (Grub issue and Boot-repair disc won't help) (SOLVED)
Post by: Fanch on July 02, 2014, 06:05:52 am
Hello there,

I'm trying to install Peppermint on a 10-year old 32-bit laptop that used to have Windows XP on it. Before making my mind on Peppermint, I must probably add that I tried several other distributions of Linux, which I believe could be the reason to my installation failure here.

Every time I want to install the OS, the following appears on the screen :

error: file not found.
grub rescue> _

Now I understand one must use the Boot repair disc in order to repair these grub-related issues. But every time I boot from this disc and choose "Recommended repair", the following appears :

Please enable a repository containing the [linux] packages in the software sources of Peppermint Five (sda1). Then try again.

Can anyone please tell me what it means and how could I do that?

Here below the link to the Bootinfo summary I got :
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7735814/

Thanks very much for any help.

Hi Fanch

I take it when you say "trying to install" you mean when you try to boot up the laptop if so the grub error is really just telling you that it can't find any bootable media

Can you tell us what media you are using to install Peppermint ie usb cd/dvd ?

OK, let's try reinstalling GRUB from the Peppermint 5 LiveCD/LiveUSB .. Peppermint 5's / appears to  be on /dev/sda1 you don't appear to have a separate /boot partition, and there's only one hard drive, so follow the instructions below.

Boot to the Peppermint 5 LiveCD/LiveUSB  .. and select "Try Peppermint"

Once at the desktop, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
then
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
then
Code: [Select]
update-grub
now exit the chroot environment with Ctrl+D

Now shut down the PC .. remove the LiveCD/LiveUSB .. boot normally to the hard drive.

Hi both of you and thanks for your fast replies already.

I'm using a bootable CD to install the OS.

Please find below a copy-paste from the terminal after computing the given lines :

Code: [Select]
peppermint@peppermint ~ $ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

peppermint@peppermint ~ $ for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done

peppermint@peppermint ~ $ sudo chroot /mnt

bash: /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion: No such file or directory

peppermint / # grub-install

Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>

Could not find platform dependent libraries <exec_prefix>

Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>]

ImportError: No module named site

peppermint / # update-grub

Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>

Could not find platform dependent libraries <exec_prefix>

Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>]

ImportError: No module named site

peppermint / #

I did not even  try to reboot on the hard drive since it seems not to find what it wants at the beginning...

If I were you, I'd boot to the Peppermint 5 LiveCD/LiveUSB .. then (after backing up any user data) use Gparted to delete all partitions on the hard drive .. then reinstall Peppermint using the default settings.

That worked just fine.
Also took the time to wipe some dust off the ventilator, which actually prevented - at last - the laptop to shut down untimely.

Thanks for your time and guidances!
