Title: Desktop is not showing anything.
Post by: abhaymaniyar on June 17, 2017, 03:17:14 pm
I installed peppermint and found out that the desktop is completely empty. The desktop is having a background image but nothing else. Panel is working fine but there is not icons on desktop and right clicking also does not respond to anything. I already have Variety installed but even it is not changing background image on desktop. What should I do to make it working?   :-\

Okay, I'm not familiar with Variety so can't comment on that.

After a fresh install there would not be any icons on the desktop.  The only image would be that of your wallpaper.  Is that what you get?

Just to verify, you are not getting a menu when you right click on the desktop?  Can you use the panel menu?

Have you stopped nemo from controlling the desktop ?

And did you keep a home partition from a previous installation ?

Yes, there are no icons. Only background image on desktop.

And, I can use panel menu but as we get right click menu on clicking any blank space on desktop. I am not getting that.

I am not sure if I have stopped it or not. Actually I tried certain methods to solve this issue and maybe I have stopped it doing that unknowingly.

And yes I restored home partition from a previous Ubuntu mate 15.10 installation.

Start with a clean partition. Creating a new user might work, if you can. The old home partition will cause all sorts of problems.

I created a new user but it didn't help. I can neither change the wallpaper nor get a right click menu still.

You might as well reinstall without any leftovers from different versions. That's the recommended way of doing it.

Obviously back up any personal data that you want to keep first.

Hi abhaymanlyar, welcome to Peppermint. Do you get anything when you right click on the desktop?
Title: Re: Desktop is not showing anything.
Post by: PCNetSpec on June 18, 2017, 06:49:54 pm
Good question alynur, because I'm beginning to think the OP thinks this is pure Xfce and is expecting desktop icons and a right-click context menu "applications" menu.

This is NOT pure Xfce, so you will NOT get a right-click "applications" menu .. right-clicking the desktop will only get you the nemo file actions for the desktop.

and desktop icons, if you mean "Computer", "Trash" and "Mounted Volumes" .. these can be enabled, but they are not out of the box (as they are in Xfce).

So can the OP answer alynurs question please .. what happens when you right-click on the desktop ?

Thank you for welcoming me.
I am not getting any menu on right clicking the desktop. I was expecting a nemo right click file action menu only but unfortunately I am not getting any kind of response.

If you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:
Code: [Select]
nemo -n
do you now have a right-click context menu on the desktop ?

Is the desktop displaying the wallpaper ? .. and are you able to change the wallpaper ?

No not working and I am getting this output on running the command you said:
Code: [Select]
nemo -n

(nemo:10134): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files
Initializing nemo-dropbox 2015.10.28

Is it normal?

Yeah ignore that gtk warning.

If you run:
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.nemo.desktop show-desktop-icons true
then
Code: [Select]
nemo --quit
then restart nemo from the menu by opening a file manager (Files) instance.
Or by running:
Code: [Select]
nohup nemo -n &
and close the terminal with the X button top right

Do you now have a right-click context menu on the desktop ?

Can you temporarily log off and log back onto the "Guest" account just to check if the desktop is working properly in that account ?

Okay something is massively screwed up then

Maybe try reinstalling nemo
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nemo nemo-data gir1.2-nemo-3.0 libnemo-extension1 python-nemo

You must have something else running then that's taking control of the desktop.

Can you run:
Code: [Select]
ps aux >> ~/ps-aux-output.txt
you'll then find a file called ps-aux-output.txt in your home folder.

Can you upload its contents to a pastebin
https://pastebin.com/
and post a link back here.

also has the desktop EVER worked or was it broken on install ?

Here is the link you asked for:
https://pastebin.com/vGZB4h7E

I don't know if it was working on installation as the first thing that I did was restore the home folder from previous machine so I don't know about that exactly.

Well I'm not seeing nemo running AT ALL

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
nemo -n
DO NOT CLOSE THAT TERMINAL.

Now with that terminal still open, if you right-click on the desktop do you get a context menu ?

Still nothing. And when I am running "nemo -n" the command is doing nothing. Terminal just displays that "user@user" prompt instantly.

Code: [Select]
nemo -n
won't return anything in the terminal
but after running it if you run:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [n]emo
you should see something like
mark      1941  0.1  1.3 1537408 98072 ?       Sl   11:45   0:15 nemo -n
If you do, then nemo is running .. and **should** be controlling the desktop.

I don't think this is a keyboard or touchpad problem at all as both of them are working absolutely fine except desktop.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions :)

Hello people! It stopped working again.

I was on the ninth cloud when I got it working yesterday and started my usual work on my system after that but today when I started my system I found out it not working and it is not showing any response as before. I also tried all previously mentioned methods in this thread but none of them is working.

What should I do now?

Oh that's not good, and we were so happy it was working. If it were me, I would reinstall Peppermint and not corrupt it as much as you previously did.  Peppermint is already a customized distro and not meant as a base to experiment with excessive changes. There are plenty of personalizing options you can choose but they are based on the basic Peppermint OS. To me, it seems you damaged this distro beyond repair, but I'm not an expert.

I also was very much happy but reinstalling the distro is the last thing I want to do as in that case I will have to reinstall all my installed software and that's a lot of work and time waste.

And yes I restored home partition from a previous Ubuntu mate 15.10 installation.

Sorry to be the one to point this out, but you've already wasted a week by doing it this way, it seems.

something else is still grabbing control of the desktop from nemo .. you're going to have to go through your running processes and work out what that is.

What's the output from

Not wasted actually. I am an Android developer and working on my project. If I reinstall peppermint a large portion of my time will be wasted in reinstalling all the software that I use very frequently.

But I moved the "desktop.conf" file to its parent directory and renamed it manually. It changed whole theme and icons to its default peppermint settings but desktop still not responsive.

Something else is obviously still grabbing control of the desktop away from nemo.

Can you do this again, after a reboot.
Code: [Select]
ps aux >> ~/ps-aux-output.txt
you'll then find a file called ps-aux-output.txt in your home folder.

Can you upload its contents to a pastebin

and post a link back here.

Can you also post the output from:
Code: [Select]
gsettings get org.nemo.desktop show-desktop-icons
