Title: no sound or video playback help
Post by: seanruss on April 26, 2017, 01:38:38 am
Hi all,
I am new to this Peppermint Linux and also to this forum.  I have an older laptop that i recently purchased.  It had an extremely slow and bogged down windows 7 on it.  i took the entire hard drive out and as an experiment put in a small 64G SSD drive that i had from an earlier project.  I managed to install Peppermint linux and am liking the looks and functionality of it.  It starts incredibly fast.  I am having a problem thought that i can't seem to resolve myself.  My daughter launched Youtube one day and told me that the videos had no sound.  I looked at it and the video would begin to launch but without sound then lock-up.  I tried many other videos and they wouldn't launch at all.  I repeated this with other video sited with the same results.   Next i tried my Google play music but the tracks would neither load nor play.  I am completely at a loss as to what to do.  I tried to post this same question to "advanced topics" and after 4 days my question had not come up on the board; don't know what happened??
hope someone can help.  Here is some info on my computer, hope I'm posting this correctly.

Hi seanruss, welcome to the Peppermint Forum.  It's very nice to meet you  ;).  You say this is a new installation.   Have you run a post-installation update and upgrade?  If you haven't done this, we highly recommend you do so.  This often resolves issues without the need for further intervention.

Since the time when your installation ISO was originally created, the kernel and the installed software packages will have gone through several upgrades.  Peppermint, like other Linux distributions is a very dynamic and rapidly evolving operating system.  Consequently, it needs to be kept as current as possible for optimal performance.  Please open a terminal window with the following keystrokes: Ctrl+Alt+t.  Enter the following commands into the terminal window.

TipLinux is case sensitive.  To reduce the possibility of typographical errors, please left click the Code: [Select] function to highlight the line of code.  This is located above the command on the far left side.  Use the right mouse button and select: Copy from the menu.  With your mouse cursor inside the active terminal window.  Paste the contents by clicking the right mouse button and selecting: Paste from the menu.  For Chromium Browser and Google Chrome users.  There is no need to copy, just highlight.  With your mouse cursor inside the active terminal window, simply click on the centre mouse button/wheel  to paste the contents ;).

Note: For enhanced security, passwords are entered invisibly.   Thereís NO indication of any user input.  By default "sudo" doesn't echo ANYTHING to screen (not even ******).  This way, anyone looking over your shoulder doesn't even get to see the length of your password.  You may enter an incorrect password 3 times before you have to repeat the command youíre trying to execute.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Hit Enter/Return and enter your user password when asked.  Follow the on screen instructions.  After that has completed, continue with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt dist-upgrade
Hit Enter/Return and enter your user password if asked.  Follow the on screen instructions.

After the upgrade has completed, itís very important to reboot your machine.  Itís highly likely that thereíll be a kernel upgrade  ;).

hi, yes i had updated, however, i used the upgrade symbol on thebottom-right portion of the screen.  i entered the first command and it did update something.  it appeared to be mainly the Chromium browser.  The second command it would not let me do.
Code: [Select]
abqpenmaster@abqpenmaster-HP-Pavilion-dv7-Notebook-PC ~ $ apt dist-upgrade

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Hi seanruss,

You need to preface the command with sudo:  ;)

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and then enter your password when requested.

I just noticed that's a very similar laptop to mine, which is also a dv7 :)

Are you trying to get sound over HDMI, the internal speakers or what?

Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal, and run this command (Ctrl+Shift+V to paste into the terminal):

Code: [Select]
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Do you hear a voice saying "front center"? If not, post any error message that appears.

ok, tried the extras and no change.  also, to murraymint i don't have any external monitor or speakers attatched just the stock laptop.  The speakers did work when Windows was installed so i know they do work.  and there were no error codes, but it didn't make any sound.

OK, type this into the terminal:

Code: [Select]
alsamixer

Press F6 and select HDA Intel... using the arrow keys and Enter.

Make sure there are no levels muted (MM at the bottom) or turned right down (no coloured bar, just empty blackness). Use the left and right arrow keys to highlight individual levels. If one is turned right down, use the up arrow to turn it up full. If one is muted, press M to unmute, then make sure the volume is turned up. Let us know how you get on :)

So sound used to work in Peppermint 7 on this machine but it's stopped working for some reason ?

Or has sound never worked on this machine under Peppermint 7 ?

Is it just youtube videos that have no sound, or everything ? .. eg. you still get no sound when you try to play a local mp3 with VLC ?

ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Timeout

cannot open mixer: Connection refused

and to PCNetSpec,
when i first installed this Peppermint, i launched my favorite web based game and i did have sound there.  But since then, none at all. and video do not load or play either.

pps, don't know if it matters, but i tried a live DVD for Linux Mint 18 and the sound and video worked fine.  couldn't get the Flash to run onthe browser so didn't install it.

OK, try this:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pulseaudio pavucontrol pulseaudio-equalizer

It might be a good idea to reboot then and check if you have sound, or try some of the previous steps again.

murraymints solution might work, but I have a feeling it's the pulseaudio cofing files that are corrupt, and simply reinstalling pulseaudio will cause it to continue to use the corrupt config.

So if murraymints solution on it's own doesn't work, maybe try this fuller version which will also rename the config files do they get regenerated:

Open a  terminal and run these commands
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pavucontrol
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo killall pulseaudio
then (ignoring the flashing volume notification, if indeed it is flashing):
Code: [Select]
mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/pulse-old
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pavucontrol pulseaudio pulseaudio-module-bluetooth pulseaudio-module-x11 pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-equalizer
then if necessary REBOOT.

I was thinking something similar PCNetSpec but I wasn't sure if a purge would wipe out any packages that were still needed :)

It should be fine because I tested it myself for this reply:

your posting reminded me ;)

Hi, sorry for the late response,i've been really busy the past few days and no time to mess with the puter.  None of those suggestions worked, so i downloaded and burned an entirely new Peppermint 7 DVD and reinstalled the whole schebang.   It all seems to be working fine now.  Maybe a driver was corrupted or something.  But thanks for all the help

Yes, then when presented with the GRUB menu, go to

Advanced > TOP OPTION
