Title: Peppermint 5 won't install?
Post by: yarn on June 26, 2014, 08:12:55 am
I really liked Peppermint 4 so I decided to install Peppermint 5. But, the problem is that the starting up screen freezes half way through. Is my computer under powered? Or is it something else? Thanks!  :)

Specs:
1.46508GB of RAM
Intel GMA 900
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz

It is possible your processor is not PAE capable, Please open a terminal Ctrl Alt+t and type inxi -F and also type cat /proc/cpuinfo and post the results here thanks...
It may also be a video card driver the more I think about it....  :)

Ok well it is showing the PAE tag on the cpu so it is not that, probably something to do with a video driver if it is freezing during the live cd/usb boot up, this is a little outside my range of expertise, hang in there till the experts chime in on this one...  sorry I couldn't help any further...   :(

Try adding ( i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 ) to grub.conf as shown here...    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1904374

The conflict between Intel video chip and Mesa drivers cause it to overheat and shutdown. Had a similar deal with a build I did for my big brother and this is what solved it for me. Of course..YMMV

Mesa 10 fixed it on my brothers computer..I see you are at Mesa 9

Hope this helps

Try removing "quiet splash" from the kernel boot line and see if the scrolling text gives you a clue to where the boot is stalling.
Title: Re: Peppermint 5 won't install?
Post by: Ernest on June 29, 2014, 02:49:13 pm
The pic above shows exactly how far I'm getting as well.

I used P4 for quite a while and right now would like to install P5. My notebook Acer TM8210 WLMI, iso md5checked, first attempt with method you advised Unetbootin, no success. Then burned a CD, and booted into black screen, no CD movement etc..

Using firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes it boots until stopping at the same point as shown in the pic. Removing the quiet & splash options show that it boots until "load modules from /etc/modules"
                       "configure network device"   and thereafter
"firewire_ohci 0000:0a:09.4 failed to set link Power Status"

Really would appreciate any help to tame this "beast".  As an info P4 was also booted using that firewire Kernel parameter, in fact I have to use it since Ubuntu 11 . I have read it'l help to include this in /etc/modules to blacklist it, just dont know how to do it in an ISO to get to a desktop.

Thanks for reading

[EDIT]

sorry I missed that you'd already tried that

[END EDIT]

Try adding

firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes

to the kernel boot line and see if it boots .. and please let us know.

Or even better, see if you can disable firewire in the BIOS
Title: Re: Peppermint 5 won't install?
Post by: Ernest on June 29, 2014, 03:27:50 pm
It is exactly what I did,  without "firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes" The booting process would stop in even an earlier phase before splash screen. I also tried "blacklist=firewire_ohci" like I've read in some Ubuntu forum. Sadly without success.

My excellent BIOS does not provide an option to switch off firewire, unfortunately..

Thanks for replying

Have you tried

nofw

instead ?

Nothing in the BIOS that mentions 1394 (eg. IEEE1394)

You could also try the

nodma

kernel boot parameteer
Title: Re: Peppermint 5 won't install?
Post by: Ernest on June 29, 2014, 05:26:26 pm
Thank you for trying, nofm and nodma have no effect. Booting would stop before the point where the splash screen shows.

Only either blacklist=firewire_ohci or firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes gets P5 booting to the point, where it wants to establish network devices.

And, sorry, no option for anything regarding IEEE1394 in this wonderful PHOENIX BIOS.

How can I post a pic of the screen?

OK, in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-firwire.conf there are 2 commented out lines

#blacklist firewire-ohci
#blacklist firewire-sbp2

so try adding BOTH as kernel boot parameters:

firewire-ohci.blacklist=yes firewire-sbp2.blacklist=yes

For reference, here's the whole default blacklist-firewire.conf contents:
Code: [Select]
# Select the legacy firewire stack over the new CONFIG_FIREWIRE one.

blacklist ohci1394
blacklist sbp2
blacklist dv1394
blacklist raw1394
blacklist video1394

#blacklist firewire-ohci
#blacklist firewire-sbp2

I doubt if this'll help as its a debugging parameter which needs the kernel compiling in a specific way .. but can't hurt to try

Try thiis as a kernel boot parameter:

ohci1394_dma=early
Title: Re: Peppermint 5 won't install?
Post by: Ernest on June 29, 2014, 07:19:21 pm
Sorry I saw that "ohci1394_dma=early" just now, coming back.  Tried every possible combination and found out that only

blacklist=firewire_ohci lets P5 boot until that point on the pic.

"firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes" or blacklist=firewire_ohci + blacklist=firewire_sbp2 lets booting stop earlier and screen remains black.

blacklist=firewire_sbp2 alone would stop booting with lines on the screen, which then starts to colour up with greenish "fog" starting from the bottom.

When trying blacklist=firewire_ohci + nomodeset booting stops at the same line (after "starting configure network device") but with different msg:

"pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1: unable to apply power"

Appreciate your help, it is because I KNOW peppermint, that I'd like to install P5

"pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1: unable to apply power"

That *may* be useful .. maybe we need to find a way to disable the pcmcia slot if it's not used (or maybe populate it if it's empty)?

This seems like the power to the iEEE1394 and PCMCIA slots are linked somehow .. at this point I'm thinking out loud, but it gives us something to look into.

I'll do some more searching tomorrow .. getting late over here.

Thank you very much indeed, I do not take help like this for granted.

Meanwhile I did try "ohci1394_dma=early" also in combination with blacklist=firewire_ohci, it did not alter anything.

Have a good rest, so long..

Try ernests

blacklist=firewire_ohci
and/or
firewire-ohci.blacklist=yes

boot parameter(s) along with removing "quiet splash" and see if it gets any further.

if it does .. post the last message on screen both before and after hitting Esc

Post by: Ernest on July 04, 2014, 11:37:42 am
Thank you for trying.

If you look at my postings above you will see, that I already did all that you suggest.

In fact since a couple of years I used "firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes", without that I could not have booted P4.

It is a bug, well known and since years not corrected. If I'm right it came along with a new version of "udev", but the boot parameter provided a work around.

I'm just disappointed that as of Ubuntu 14 the boot parameter is obviously ignored by the new kernel.

Wasn't it one of the great advantages of Ubuntu that it would work "out of the box" without giving trouble unlike some MS products?

Looks to me like a regression.

Friendly greetings..

What happens if you replace "quiet splash" with "recovery nomodeset" .. then when at the recovery screen choose to resume booting ?

Post by: Ernest on July 09, 2014, 10:07:17 am
I tried with "recovery nomodeset", but only to see the same result, firewire_ohci failure.

Now I looked a bit into the "bug-division" and of course found the reason:

BUG #981936, if you look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/981936 you will see that this bug dates back to 2012.

I remember having used firewire_ohci.blacklist=yes ever since Ubuntu 11, meaning the bug occured even before that.

As the work around by applying the boot parameter doesn't work anymore, I won't be able to use new versions of Linux distros based on Ubuntu.

May be they simply find, that there is not enough Acer TM8200 users out there to bother with a solution.

Sad thing, would have loved to get your new shining P5 to work. Appreciate your efforts in trying to help, because at Ubuntu forum they simply ignored my plea for help.

In the past whenever I've see that from a LiveUSB stick, I've just given it a while and it's continued.

I have no idea why some machines decide they need to look in the CD/DVD drive for so long (?) .. another option is to disconnect the optical drive during installation, then reconnect it afterwards.

PCNetSpec and rjm65 I guess your advices were destined to yarn, right?

Because I tried just the first attempt with a pen drive and thereafter only with a CD.

But at least in my case, I'm afraid, as long as this bug with firewire management exists, there won't be much left to do.

So adding

How about

? .. that's not ideal, I just want to know if it works.

Try just

acpi=off

then when it gets to

cant open /dev/sr0: No medium found

leave it for about 20mins .. that line will probably repeat about 10 times .. then it may continue to boot.

If it does, don't install yet .. I just want to know if it does boot (eventually).

You know where you're adding the kernel boot parameters after hitting the "Tab" key ?

Somewhere in that white writing will be:-

file=/cdrom/preseed/peppermint.seed

that changing that part of the text to:-

live-media-path=/casper/

and appending ignore_uuid as a boot parameter

so the line also ends with:-

acpi=off  ignore_uuid

I've been running Peppermint 5 on top of a Linux 3.16rc mainline kernel with no probs (9-sec boot)...

Anyway, sorry we couldn't find a working solution .. there'll be a peppermint 5 respin soon with an updated kernel .. maybe, just maybe that might help .. but I wouldn't necessarily hold my breath, kernel regressions like this unless they affect a lot of people can go unnoticed for some time :(
