Title: how to avoid fan noise when creating screen cast videos?
Post by: harishpathangay on January 26, 2017, 02:34:15 am
how to avoid fan noise when creating screen cast videos?
I use simple screen recorder and when I create screen cast videos, I get the laptop fan noise also getting recorded.
how to avoid that fan noise when recording? I am recording using laptop internal mic.
Will an external MIC solve the issue?

thanks,

It will probably help but it often depends on the quality of the mic, if not removing background noise can be quite easily done post recording with Audacity

just to be clear.
I do not mean the fan noise from the ceiling fan in my room.
I mean the laptop internal CPU fan, whose noise is recorded in the screen cast videos. how to remove that noise?

Will using external MIC solve my problem, because the noise is not from outside. but the noise is from the inside the laptop.
Hope we are in same page. Will Audacity solve this issue?

No I meant the CPU fan, I wasn't aware you had a ceiling fan, but now that I am I think i might be a good idea to turn it off while recording just as a precaution

No Audacity will do nothing to help reduce noise during recording, Audacity is a sound editor that can remove any unwanted noise after recording and many other things besides

Will an External Mic ignore CPU fan noise during recording using Screen Recorder?
I am completely new to Linux, I thought since I am using Laptop Internal Mic, it is picking up CPU Fan Noise.
Or is it just my lame brain?

Why not give it a go and see?  Plug in your external mic and disable the internal mic (or mute it).  Record a small bit and see if you still have the noise.

BTW, you joined the forum in Dec 2015 and have 131 posts so you're beyond being "completely new to Linux."    ;)

cheers

I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I would say you probably are more inclined to pick up cpu fan noise with the internal mic, obviously the further you are away from the source of the noise the less likely you are to pick it up, but that also depends on the sensitivity of the mic all you can do is minimise all the background noise you can, it's also helpful to have the mic in a fixed position, preferably a mic stand and as mac says give it a go.

External mic should be fine if it's not right next to the fan (and preferably directional).

I always close-mike (http://ledgernote.com/columns/studio-recording/close-miking/) when making vids.

And, I keep it simple -- no mixers, transmitters, receivers, et cetera.

Here's my favorite mic (remember to remove the battery(s) when you're not using it) ...

^ I've got one of those (not the iS which just means it comes with the smartphone adapter). It's a great sounding mic and it can clip onto the soundhole of an acoustic guitar too ;)

Hi,
I have uploaded one video indicating what i am interpreting as fan sound.

please let me know, if it is possible to reduce that background hissing in the video.
the hissing is more prone if i increase the sensitivity in Pulse Audio Volume Control. Currently my setting is 16.
the most favourable for me is to avoid this hissing during recording itself. i do not want to do post alterations of video.
