Hi everyone, my name is Jon and I live in the Yukon in Canada. Been using Linux for almost a year and have installed it on all my computers (4). I have found Peppermint to be a nice balance of all things i want in a OS.
Got our 1st computer in the mid 80s, I believe it was an 8088 with a huge 30mb hard drive lol.
Welcome back. It's always great to have another person come back to Peppermint. :D I was thinking your username looked familiar, I probably remember you from the old forum. No doubt. I'm sure I posted there a time or two (or three). It's nice to see the progress that has been made with Peppermint over the years.

Hey N4RPS, and welcome to the forum :) .. a radio ham eh ?
HAHA Love it - Ain't that the truth 8)
Hi N4RPS, welcome aboard ;). Yeah, we're quite a bit different from other Ubuntu spins. We truly believe in freedom of choice. I hope you enjoy the ride ;)!!
I already see PM6 as something new to master. The more I play around with Peppermint, the more I like its perfect blend of what I like most about XFCE and LXDE in one platform.
Yes, indeed. I have a General class license. I started off as KF4ICR, copied enough code to answer enough questions to get Tech Plus (and the vanity call) in '98, and took advantage of the opportunity to upgrade with only the written General exam in 2000. Since my future involves some international travel, an upgrade to Extra is forthcoming because unless you hold an Extra-class ticket, CEPT limits you to Technician privileges.
Anyway, someday I'll get my General. I've read that it's easier now.
Hi, I'm Juliet, I'm soon to be 19 and I've been using peppermint for a few years now, I've made a few posts asking for help on here before and the support I received was awesome :) I figure I should introduce myself to the community if I'm gonna be sticking with this distro for so longIt's now official, you're one of us now. Wot's dubstep? Post some "Classics" links please and lets see if we like em...

Hi tppthpthp
Geesh - say that three times when you're drunk :P
PeppermintOS has to be my favourite distro. I just installed it now and, I gotta say, it's beautiful. The DE is set up so nicely, the black theme is great and easy on the eyes. It's so quick aswell! The software is just as good; Ice is a great piece of software. Even thought I don't use it, I can see it's potential to be great for the people who do. It's similar to what has to be my favourite feature: how easy it is to switch drivers. I expected to have to find a tutorial on how to download proprietary Nvidia drivers on peppermint(it was a nightmare on opensuse), but lo and behold it's as easy as changing it in a GUI. I honestly cannot think of any negative critism to this operating system. Great job guys.Hi memelad2005

Hi The PoorGuy, I'm still a big fan of thermionic valve/vacuum tube technology. I'm looking at the beautiful orange glow coming from a matched pair of 6Ж1П-ЕВ (6J1P-EV) pentodes. They come from the old Soviet Voskhod, Kaluga factory. That factory produced some of the best high quality vacuum tubes ever. Thankfully for us, the USSR over produced them in the millions. Vintage old new stock is still dirt cheap to buy ;). I've them in a little pre-amp I rebuilt for high-res headphones. They produce a wonderfully warm and rich sound. Something that transistor technology just can't replicate ;).
..I can't bring myself to using the made in China vacuum tubes. :-\
Thanks Andy and The PoorGuy (and a warm belated welcome from me too) :)I don't know these valves. What I can advise is checking out the: www.thetubestore.com (http://www.thetubestore.com/) and www.musiciansfriend.com (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/). Run a search for both EL84 and 12AX7 / ECC83 on these sites. The reviews from bass players, are pretty much a big thumbs up for those JJ valves 8). The price for that matched set is great too; always a plus ;). It's still worth checking out the reviews for other manufacturers of these type of valves. It all depends on the tone you're looking for :). If you've never used a new set of valves, don't worry about any hissing or pops you first hear. That's just impurities on the cathodes burning off. It'll usually stop or start to drastically die down after about 24 hours of use. That's when you'll get to know your amp ;).
These are the types of valves I'll need for two of my amps (as much as a reminder for myself as anything):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FENDER-BLUES-JUNIOR-Amplifier-JJ-Re-Valve-Set-EL84-x2-12AX7-ECC83-x3-/231560601799?hash=item35ea1660c7:g:RMQAAOSwv0tVUlOB
Those ones are not old Russians but apparently new Slovakian ones made by an ex-employee of Tesla (the bloke not the car company...)! Have either of you tried or heard of the JJ tubes?
Need any help emtyin that tin ? .. I'm always up for a project :)
[EDIT]
Somehow I already know the answer.....

I'll have to check but I think there are only vapours left though :))!!
The price for that matched set is great too; always a plus ;).I'm getting the exact same valves for £20 cheaper from www.ampvalves.co.uk as I realised I don't need them to be matched. My amps are too puny to have pairs of valves in them. Now I just need to get a 12AX7A, a higher-spec version for my audio preamp, which I've already found on eBay :D
One of my future projects is to make my own valve amp for my 3-string Cigar Box Guitar and for the one I'm in the process of building out of a Jack Daniels 150 year commemorative tin box - great fun ;).That sounds like a lot of fun! I came across a cigar box amp on eBay last night, not that I'm advocating smoking here ;) I've made my own lap-steel-like contraptions in the past and I should really get around to doing more of that stuff again.

You guys built here an amazing community, I feel very happy that I've found you and that you welcomed me into your community!

Don't ya miss the days of dialup modems with Linux ?
Hiya everyone!
I'm a bit of an old fossil. Aged 28, but been with computers since my early childhood. DOS, Win 3.11, Linux, BSD - you name it. Right now I'm looking for programming jobs and challenges. Hope I find some of it in Peppermint OS, because I think the project is quite amazing :).

Welcome Mike, you can (sometimes) create a LiveUSB on a Chromebook but it requires you enable developer mode (then use 'dd' from the freshly enabled terminal) which will erase all your changes in ChromeOS and set you back to factory defaults.
Can't you get temporary access to a Linux or Windows PC ?
I'll flag this topic as unread .. hopefully that'll remind me to come back and take a look at those suggestions once we get the PM8 resin out the door.
TVM :)
Wanted to take the chance to introduce myself here, because I've been utilising the forum as a resource already. Bad manners, apologies all around.
I have wanted to get Linux for over a decade but, sadly it has never been easy enough to use. I have an old Pavilion DV9 and my version of win10 became corrupt. So it was time to dip my toe in again to see if the water was warm enough yet. I tried lots of distro's this time round and Peppermint was the only one not to crash, to install first time and to update properly. Plus is has a good selection of programmes in the store. My laptop boots up (and turns off) much quicker than with win10. The screen is clear and I love the configurable desktop. I am trying to think of all of the programmes that I "need" from Win10 but I really can't think of anything where a version isn't available (except onedrive, but i am considering switching to dropbox so not a big issue).
I am a happy chappy 8)

Hello from Fred in Tennessee!
"Hi. You're from Tennessee, right?" "What?" "Are you from Tennessee?" "No. I'm from Florida." "Sorry. I thought you were from Tennessee." "Why?" "Cuz' you're the only '10' I see in here." |

Hi williamthe1st,
Welcome to the Forums. I do believe we have a few members who tip the scales at or around 67 but I cannot name them. I will be 60 this year.
Re "Blighty", don't get yourself is a tissy over it. Yeah it's "Home" but you seem to have found a new "home" now :)
As for giving back to the Community - you already are by chatting here and asking questions. The answers supplied may help someone.

My guess would be somewhere in the east midlands ? .. that statement starts and with midlands colloquialisms, but if it were the west midlads the middle would likely be "cock" or "cocker" .. or am I totally off the mark because "Y'alreet" could also be much further north. :-\
[EDIT]
Returning after 25 years .. I think you'll be shocked at the extent of the nanny state and cultural "snowflake" attitude where everyone is now so eager to be offended by something/anything that they actively seek out things to grumble about :(
Seriously, I've been here for that 25 years and I don't really recognise England much any more .. or maybe that's just 'me' getting old and grumpy :'(
I think what I'm trying to say is if you're expecting the England of your youth, you're likely to be disappointed .. you're not missing much.
Oh, and if I'm right about the midlands .. it's all balti and rice there now anyway :))
I would have guessed somewhere in Yorkshire ?
Yeah I see your point Zeb, the "Ey up" definitely points there, Y'alreet" could also be Gordie (though not so much the "Eh yup") .. I guess it could be anywhere Midlands --> northward.
It was the "duck" that made me think East Midlands or possibly South Yorkshire such as Nottingham/Chesterfield/Sheffield kinda area.
Now I wanna know ? ???
Nearly eleven years in The Netherlands for me. I'm also shivering. The amount of rain we get, makes the UK look positively arid :o!
First of all, welcome aboard, William :)
Second of all ...Nearly eleven years in The Netherlands for me. I'm also shivering. The amount of rain we get, makes the UK look positively arid :o!
I knew you guys wouldn't believe this, so I took a screenie of my Conky - the PWS I use (https://goo.gl/yHJLx5) is less than 2 blocks away.
Yes, it's actually raining in Arizona. I can count, on one hand, the number of times a year that I get rain:Spoiler (click here to view / hide)(http://vindsl.com/images/VinDSL-Screenshot_2018-02-14_15:33:21.png)[close]
Talking about 'positively arid', Andy, it's been raining here all day, and it's still only 75% humidity. LoL! :D
Welcome goody211 and williamthe1st! Great group here, very helpful and supportive.
All the best...

Hi Guys,
My name is Tony and I am a Peppermint user.
My name is Henrik. I have been using Linux, on and off, since 2000, both on the desktop and server.
These days I am primarily using Linux on my computers at home. I have been looking for a desktop OS, based on Ubuntu and a GTK based desktop, as my daily driver. At work I mostly work with IBM AIX.
After using Peppermint 9, I must say I have finally found it!
Thank you so much for this excellent distro ;D
... bit behind on my welcomes here!
Welcome mintspider :)
Hello, mintspider. Yeah, it's fun to watch zebedeeboss and stevesveryown putting various distros through their paces on Big Daddy Linux Live! on YouTube. Welcome to Peppermint. :)Listen out for the Scotsman!
Welcome aboard, mintspider :)Cheers.
Welcome aboard, Pepper9 :)
Every machine runs as they should, no hickups, no problems...............boring, I know :D
Just a quick intro: I am a French guy living in Spain and been using Windows for 20 years. I tried Ubuntu 7 years ago, but things were a bit more complicated back then (especially I remember issues with graphic cards and wifi). So I am very new to Linux and for beginners it is hard to find the right distro (just too many choices)[/i]
So my first post it's to say a big THANK YOU to the team and all people involved! I am having a lot of fun, reading the forum and discovering all the little things and so much to learn !!!! This is the beginning of a long trip !
Oops, wrong account.
I'm Johan 59 years old and Peppermint addict 8)
Super clean and easy to navigate.
I currently have a few years-old HP Pavilion currently running Ubuntu Mate for day to day stuff, and an Acer C710 Chromebook currently running Peppermint 10. The Acer is the laptop I usually try new stuff out on initially and if I like it, it goes on the HP. Generally, in my distro walkabout, which seems to be a compulsory experience for most Linux users, I have always come back to Ubuntu based distros. I did like Crunchbang and Manjaro when I used them but the original Crunchbang development ceased and with Manjaro, I could never quite get comfortable with it for day to day running and maintaining.
Belated welcome to @clatterfordslim, @Johan ... ... we hope you all find a nice comfy home here in our forums...

Thanks! It's not too shabby of a machine. Didn't seem worthy of disposing of it. Battery was a little tired out so a new one is on the way. Now I'm already thinking about a 2GB RAM upgrade and a 250GB SSD.
Soon, in the process of upgrading, I accidentally overwrote the Windows partition, and it took me a couple months to notice.
My Ubuntu 14.04 system (which I needed to upgrade) had gotten a little too slow for my liking.
So far, I'm liking the community here, even if it is a lot smaller than the Ubuntu community.
...instructed by my family to go back to windows and fearing their wrath I complied.
Fast forward to 2019 and I'm now back to linux, I dont remember what brought me back but after several months of distro hopping and youtube, I've ended up here!

Sounds delicious! I, too, am crazy about Asian food, and, lately, I've been wanting to try out some Filipino banana ketchup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_ketchup). With a little luck I'll get my hands on some one of these days. ;)
Welcome, zarg2, to Peppermint's fun, friendly, and informative forum. :)
