Title: [solved] monitor brightness software control
Post by: hofy on December 28, 2016, 08:09:21 am
Hello there,

I have two dysfunctional buttons (tried cleaning them to no avail) on the monitor, one of them being the (-) key and can't reduce brightness (which is maxed out). I found a package in peppermint 7 in the synaptic package manager called (if I remember correctly) ddc that wasn't a success (maybe because I used a VGA analog cable). Now I have the same monitor plugged in with a DVI cable but on a peppermint 6 machine and can't find the package! is there a repo I need to add?

Alternatively, do you know about any utility that will help me lower brightness?
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)

thanks!

Hi Hofy,

A quick search for "Brightness" and you would have found this tutorial and other tips to achieve what you are asking.

Hi Hofy,

Try to keep searches simple and if you don't find what you are looking for change the wording.  I usually find that helps.

Regards Zeb...

edit :btw the tutorial I linked is no4 in the list if you search "monitor brightness"

Alternately ...

If you're using nVidia drivers, you should be able to control the 'brightness' via the 'Digital Vibrance' option, in the  'nVidia X Server Settings'.

Use the Colour Correction tab instead.  It has better controls for Brightness / Contrast /Gamma

The nice thing about my tutorial is it is graphics card neutral :)

Yes, a great tute !

Not every nVidia chipset user is running nVidia drivers.  And, I wouldn't be either, if my card didn't require them.

Hopefully, Nouveau drivers will catch-up ...
