Title: Just Discovered 'Shutter' LoL !
Post by: VinDSL on October 24, 2016, 06:49:16 pm
Late to the party, but ...

WoW !  :o

How did I miss 'Shutter (https://launchpad.net/~shutter/+archive/ubuntu/ppa)' all these years ?!?!?!?  I guess it's because I'm in the habit of using 'scrot' from CLI.

Doing a search, I see that 'Shutter' has been brought up in a few posts, here, but I never paid any attention to it.

Today, I was looking for an easy way to make screenshots of individual displays, on my multi-monitor rig.

'Shutter' was the fix.  Installed it from the LP repo, added 'Image::ExifTool (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExifTool)' for shiggles, and BOOM!

Yeah, it a wicked screen capture program.  It's bit on the chunky side though  :o.  I've been using it since I first used Linux nearly 4 years ago.   As I said, the big downside is its size.  Other than that, it's everything you need in one package  ;).

Ah, so it's a screenshot program?  (I guess you realize from that comment that you weren't alone under that rock :)) )

Yup !  This thing is great -- a major project, obviously.

Can't believe I've never run across it, before now ...   ::)

I did consider it for PM7, but the dependency weight bothered me a bit .. I think we have about half of them anyway, but even 50Mb seems a lot for a screenshot utility.

Funny the way Linux changes your perceptions .. I'd never have thought 50Mb a lot in Windows.
(but it's a 20th of our total ISO size)

Hell, that's probably the size of one icon in Windows.  ::)

Hi

Shutter is one of my must installs, lots of flexability and easy to use (for me that's a must - if I have to read a manual then the software has failed in IMO)

So that's every single command line utility out the window then ?

Hi

Maybe I should have clarified GUI software :)

I've been forcing myself to boot into '10' once a day, to check for updates/upgrades.

The proprietary nVidia drivers get upgraded once or twice a month.  I'm aghast at the size - 700-800MB - and their servers are slow !

I suppose you could stick a suitable version in the Peppermint repos, where it's easy to find, with the storage path set to 'Desktop' in the default prefs, and so forth.  It really is an excellent utility !

I've only scratched the surface, but it looks like all the steps I normally take to make a screenshot, shell into my server, transfer it, post it, etcetera can all be done from this single app.  Plus , I like they way it stays available in the panel, once you start it, or one can autostart it at boot, blah, blah, blah .  It's very well thought-out IMO.

As an aside, maybe Bryan could add some code to 'scrothelper' so one could choose screenshots of individual desktops on multi-display setups.  That's all I was looking for originally, when I discovered 'Shutter'.

Anyway, maybe we can churn some ideas in Meta, and get something useful out of it, eh what ?   ;)

10 makes you use the drivers from the Microsoft update thing, right?  I think I read that somewhere.  Ugh.  Yeah, the Microsoft Update servers are excruciatingly slow.  Fortunately, I don't have to deal with those anymore, except if I actually want to update my XBOX 360, which usually isn't on the Internet. (I tool the WIFI dongle off)

I absolutely hate slow downloads, especially driver installs or updates.  I fragged Solus the other day because my Nvidia install was going at around 500 KB/s, which I couldn't take.  So, I rebooted into Peppermint and used GParted to terminate it with extreme prejudice.  Meanwhile, updates in Peppermint are quick and painless.  Driver installs are also a breeze.  (makes me wonder why I ever leave)

Don't pull it too hard - I need it to walk on   :P

I think having a version of Shutter in the Peppermint repo as part of a Meta Package is a cracker of an idea ;).  Shutter is the Swiss Army Knife of screen capture software.  It really has everything you need for capturing and editing screenshots.  It's just too chunky to be part of an installation ISO.  Yeah, I'm all for it being included as part of a Meta Package ;).
