To help us help you, ALL new requests for technical support should include basic system information.

If you haven't already done so, please open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
then copy what was returned in the terminal and post it back here.

This was an automated response but please don't ignore it, providing this information now is highly likely to save time for both you and any prospective respondents and aid in the diagnosis of your problem  .. Thanks in advance :)

Looks like it's hung on a dkms build .. I'd suspect the graphics driver, are you using the nvidia proprietary driver ?

guvcview works for me first time every time .. does it ever refuse to start from the command line ?
Code: [Select]
guvcview
and if so, does it return any error ?

and what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep guvcview
?

Hi Sudo Reboot, could you please post the requested output contained in the automated response.  After we've received the output, we'll have a better picture of your system and which questions to ask. ;).

Hi Everyone,

I have done everything the previous posts have told me to do.

Here are the results :-

Hopefully, we can sort it out.

Big thanks to all the Peppermint Team.

Any chance of just pasting the outputs rather than putting them in a video?

Okay one problem at a time...

For the kernel issue .. try switching back to the open source nouveau graphics driver, then REBOOTING (important that you reboot) .. once rebooted and you're running the nouveau driver, try running:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
did it work this time ?

if not, please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dkms status

PS. in the future when asked for output, can you post it directly into the forum .. we can't copy/paste from a video, and it's a PITA to have to keep findinng the right spot in the video ;)

Right guys, Can`t seem to get back to the open source driver.
So will restore my backup (it`s quicker)
Hopefully this will resolve the kernel issue I am having.

Will report back when Restored.

Great stuff, glad to hear you're up and running again SR :)

Okay guvcviwe....

Ignore the warnings when opening guvcview in the terminal .. I just want to know whether it opens first time every time from the terminal ?

and if not, what was displayed in the terrminal on the occasion that it DID'NT start ?

I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem with guvcview itself, or a problem with the launcher

+PCNetSpec

Will try what you said, and report back. :)

+Slim.Fatz

That's easy.
If a development team are too lazy to reply to a problem a user of its OS his having, then the
Solution would be :-

1. Leave that OS (nice thing about Linux is there's another one not to far away)
2. Don't donate any more money to a project where no help is provided.
3. Stay clear of people who have negativity in regards to its user base.

Uhm, I don't think that developers have any obligation towards a user - after all, what is one single user? And I think they have too much work to be "lazy". We should be thankful to them for having given us (the world) another Linux distro that looks and works nice. Just my thoughts :)

We'll certainly try when/where we can, but anything you can do to "help us help you" saves both of us time and is liable to hasten any resolution :)

[EDIT]

Also please remember this forum is not only for 1:1 assistance it's also meant to be a SEARCHABLE reference for EVERYONE (who may be looking for the same issue/resolution), text in screenshots (or videos) is not indexable (either by the forum search feature or Google) so will not be returned in any search query ;)

I am still running Windows (that being Vista, and yes, Windows Vista runs fine). And now and then I end up at the Microsoft Windows forums.

You get these "MVP's", as they are called, that are "exceptional, independent community leaders who share their passion, technical expertise, and real-world knowledge of Microsoft products with others" and who "actively share their ... technical expertise with the different technology communities related directly or indirectly to Microsoft", rotfl.

I often find the "solutions" (note my quotation marks) hilarious, because they are simply useless

(It is also possible that their answers are so "low-level", because either Windows or Windows users are "low-level" people, and I hope there are no Windows users here that I may offend now).

It looks to me that many experienced Linux users (and I am not one of those) at messageboards and blogs know more about Linux, than those "MVP's" know about Windows. /rolleyes

Hi Skara Brae, a lot of the time us Linux users appear to have a greater depth of knowledge for simple reasons.  The Linux desktop is less complicated to manage.  It's more logical and elegant in its structure.  It's Open source, there's nothing hidden from anyone.  It also allows greater experimentation in comparison to Windows.  Window is only superficially easier to operate than Linux based systems.
