Title: To those who use their computer at night...
Post by: Kyle on July 08, 2016, 07:02:53 am
There is an application called Redshift (http://jonls.dk/redshift/) that is a open-source software that is similar to the proprietary software f.lux (https://justgetflux.com/). Both of them are helpful if you use your computer in a dark enviornment (I.E at night or a dark room setting). Redshift (http://jonls.dk/redshift/) automatically changes your screens color temperature according to your surroundings. This is helpful because it blocks out the "bad light" that keeps you awake at night when you use your computer before night. It is also useful during the day, because it still blocks out "bad light" that can irritate your eyes when using your computer for long periods of time or if you suffer migranes/headaches. It is easy to set up and is lightweight and is based on GTK. For me, it uses about 50MB of RAM. To install gtk-redshift (http://jonls.dk/redshift/) follow the directions below...

First make sure your system is up to date:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Then install gtk-redshift (http://jonls.dk/redshift/):

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install gtk-redshift

Once it is done installing. You are free to launch the program and it will automatically adjust your brightness according to the time of where you live. You can set it to autostart so it will constantly have control of your screens color temperature (I recommend this for those who user their computers for long periods of time in an indoor setting). That's it! If you have any questions/concerns feel free to ask!

P.S: I have no affiliation to the mentioned software creators, I am simply sharing a great program and providing a newbie friendly guide on how to use it!

This is good, it'll probably save my eyesight in the long run since I do most of my work at night.

I need some help getting it to autostart properly. It's trying to connect to the location server before my wifi connection is up and then it just gets stuck on "Period: unknown". That means it can't figure out what time of day it is so it won't do anything.

Stick a delay in it's autostart command

So if it normally autostarts with the command
Code: [Select]
redshift
instead make it read
Code: [Select]
bash -c "sleep 10 ; redshift"
(which adds a 10 second delay to its startup .. adjust to requirements)

If you don't know where it's autostart file is, let us know.

Thanks, just done it:

Code: [Select]
Exec=sh -c 'sleep 60 ; /usr/bin/redshift-gtk'

to be on the safe side, 10 wasn't enough.

Seems pretty helpful! I use my computer for really long periods if i'm able to, so this will come in handy.
