Title: how to remove categories from "Whiskermenu"
Post by: spence on June 27, 2016, 02:04:31 pm
Okay, starting a new thread as directed :P

I have a few categories I'd like to remove from the new p7 whiskermenu. I'm supposing it may be a wee bit different than changing the top level categories in previous versions of peppermint?

There's no simple way to do this, beyond hiding all the icons contained within the category .. then the category will hide itself.

The only other method would be to manually edit
/etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-applications.menu
and I'd STRONGLY advise against that unless you know what you're doing .. you could VERY easily end up with a badly broken menu structure.

guess i picked the right board to ask in then... I'm not a gamer...  i had already reviewed our conversation about how we did this in previous versions of peppermint... saved an original copy of the file.... made the appropriate edits and boom... Games is gone... whisker menu just a bit more to my liking...

:)

You don't have to delete the .desktop files, just open them in a text editor and add the line

NoDisplay=true

and save them .. they'll then not be displayed in the menu

Also, if you have icons that appear in more than one category and you want one icon and category gone but the other to remain, you can just remove that category from the "Categories=" line.  If you do it this way, be sure to save the edited file in your ~/.local/share/Applications directory.  If you save it there, it will override the file in /usr/share/Applications folder.  Also, a program update won't undo your changes like it will if you save it to /usr/share/Applications.

good to know for the other remaining categories, but there will never be any games on this machine, so I'm not too worried  8)

I always have to do that with LibreOffice Math.  It shows up in both Office and Educational, but I never install any other educational software, so it's pointless to have a category with an icon in it that appears elsewhere in the menu.  So, I always edit the .desktop file and save it to my local Applications folder because I tried it once where I saved it to the system folder and an update put the category Education back in the file.  ::)  However, the system can't override stuff in your home folder for your user account.  8)

Yeah good point .. .desktop launchers in:-

~/.local/share/applications

take priority (for the current user) over the system wide ones in:-

/usr/share/applications

If you have the same .desktop launcher in both directories, it will be the one in your home folder that is acted upon.

Code: [Select]
NoDisplay=true was added to all the local desktop files which aren't going to be used by me, myself and I... thanks guys

Alacarte is the best option, (It comes with a restore default button) , I don't know why Pmint comes with menu libre (just sucks, no offense)  >:(

So install it .. problem solved (or just starting).

By the way, Peppermint does NOT come with menulibre, it never has and probably never will .. there is no 100% safe menu editor for LXDE so we don't ship with one :P

Feel a bit stupid now ? .. no offence.

And what's with the all bold text ?
