hitting the escape to select USB boot works, but once in LiveUSB mode, using TAB to edit the install script doesn't work... Also doesn't matter if I'm trying to "Test/try out" or  "Install" Peppermint7

Not quite sure what you're saying here Spence  :-\

Do you mean you're unable to get to the GRUB menu, then hit "E" to edit the kernel boot line ?

Are you talking about editing the kernel boot line on a LiveUSB, or an installed system ?

Hold down SHIFT at boot for the Grub menu, then press E to edit the kernel boot parameters.

??? I get to the Peppermint7 LiveUSB menu... where nomodeset makes no difference whether I attempt to TEST or INSTALL... why is that confusing?

Hold down SHIFT at boot for the Grub menu, then press E to edit the kernel boot parameters.

holding down the SHIFT key returns
Code: [Select]

OK, on a LiveUSB, when you get to the Install Peppermint/Try Peppermint screen, hit the "Tab" key

You'll see some white text at the bottom that ends with quiet splash --

make that end quiet splash nomodeset

then hit enter to continue booting.

Because your original post didn't state that you were using a LiveUSB .. I'm not a mind reader, or a practitioner of remote viewing.

Sorry, but my original post used USB and LiveUSB below the inxi-F code.... but anyway,  this is precisely what I've attempted 15 times, as I did review my posts on previous installs before beginning today. Each time I hit the backspace to delete the -- behind quiet splash -- creates a newly repeated line... then I enter nomodeset... and am quickly back at the Install/Try graphical menu...

So what exactly happens when you try to boot normally .. black screen ?

and what happens if you boot with nomodeset .. same ?

selecting "Try" ,"Install" , "Check disc" and "Boot from first drive" all quickly return me to the graphical LiveUSB menu...
doesn't matter if I've typed nomodeset in "Try" or "Install" first. Only the "Test Memory" menu option works for me.

"note to self" keep my queries "above the CODE fold" so to speak ;~)

Ah right it's not a black screen (graphics) issue, it's dumping you back to the "Try/Install" screen.

I'll see what I can find spence.

Just for clarity, have you checked the MD5 sum of the ISO, and tried burning it to another USB stick ?

yes PCNetSpec... i did verify the MD5sum...  have not yet tried another USB... i did verify that the laptop bios had all boot options enabled and i moved the three USB options to the top of the list...   :-\

different LiveUSB, no difference... after a single dash appears in upper left of screen, then" press esc to change boot order" i keep getting thrown back to the LiveUSB's main graphical interface where I can choose Try or Install menu.  :-\

would my use of a much more recent kernel in p6 be an issue? 4.6.0-040600rc5-generic?

when i attempt to reverify the GPG Keys, I get this:
Code: [Select]
sean@hpG6 ~/Downloads/peppermint7 $ gpg --list-keys
/home/sean/.gnupg/pubring.gpg
-----------------------------
pub   2048R/AECF1D2F 2013-05-02
uid                  Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) <mark@pcnetspec.co.uk>
sub   2048R/4B06BE0D 2015-05-03
sub   2048R/3606A7AD 2015-05-03

but the https://peppermintos.com/gpg-verification/ (https://peppermintos.com/gpg-verification/) tells me i should get this:

Code: [Select]
pub   2048R/AECF1D2F 2013-05-02
uid                  Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) <mark@pcnetspec.co.uk>
sub   2048R/65814265 2013-05-02

which does not match... yet i eventually get this:

Code: [Select]
sean@hpG6 ~/Downloads/peppermint7 $ gpg --verify Peppermint-7-20160616-amd64.iso.sig Peppermint-7-20160616-amd64.iso
gpg: Signature made Thu 23 Jun 2016 05:35:13 AM MST using RSA key ID AECF1D2F
gpg: Good signature from "Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) <mark@pcnetspec.co.uk>"

Possible, but I'm not convinced this is a kernel issue, kernel panics normally lock the machine not kick you back to the try/install screen.

Are you saying you get the message "press esc to change boot order" on screen ? .. if so, what are you presented with if you hit escape ?

the reason I ask is that sounds like a BIOS message .. it may be best to try setting the USB stick as the first boot device .. but more and more this seems like a problem with the system reading the USB stick

Is there any chance you could try it "old school" on a DVDR ?

The important lines in the GPG key listing are the top 2 lines, which do match ;)

spence, I need to go to bed, but before I do I'm going to give you a link to the Peppermint 7 release candidate ISO ... can you see if that gives you the same issue

I had a big summer pool party to attend yestiddy, got home after 1 AM... now ready to do some triage on the HP Pavilion G6... I do still have cd-r's, dvd-rw's laying about, but don't think I've ever burned a successful ISO with this laptop.  I'm going to download the initial release of p7 first... and try it on my original usb stick... which is 2gb...

all I'm doing, and have done previously, is to allow the usb image writer to create the LiveUSB....

hopefully, that's the proper process

I'd have expected that to work, but still can't hurt to try the RC, it has a slightly earlier kernel version, but beyond that not much difference.

Installed like clockwork on my First Attempt ... no need to TAB in order to set nomodeset. Now just need to poke around a bit... i like the new menu already... way coolio...

Initially wasn't sure where to place/start this thread PCNetSpec... feel free to place it wherever you prefer

Great news :)

I'll move it to the "Installation" forum once you reply to this posting

Do you want help making the few minor tweaks to turn the RC into the final ? .. there's nothing big, and non are 100% necessary.
