Title: Dual or triple booting Linux distros
Post by: AndyInMokum on February 07, 2016, 10:43:56 am
Hi all, I want to double, possibly triple boot Peppermint Six with Xubuntu 15.10 and maybe Solus.  I can't remember where to put the boot loader on the additional distros.  I want to keep the Peppermint GRUB screen - many thanks  ;)

Uhhhmmm...

Last time I did that I used the Gparted Live CD to create 3 partitions on a hard drive. After that I installed the 3 distros, assigning each to another partition. The last distro is the 'winner' when it comes to GRUB. Zo, install Peppermint last.

If this is incorrect (it has been a while), I'm sure someone will correct me.

...hello Andy...if i remember correctly, you are Windows user, so do not forget to install  Windows FIRST...the rest will be easier... ;)

Hi AndyInMokum,

Unfortunately, Capivara is right -- but only when you tell each distro to install GRUB in the MBR !!

Howerever, when you install the GRUB for each of the new Linux distros in the same partition as the new distro, then (if the GRUB from Peppermint Six is in the MBR) the Peppermint Six GRUB will remain untouched.  ;)

Thanks guys, I had a sneaky feeling I was going about this bassackwards  :).  I already have Peppermint Six installed and for all intents and purposes, it's finished.  I'd prefer to leave it that way.  If I continue with the installation of the other two distros.  Is there a way I can reinstall the Peppermint's GRUB to the MBR  :-\?

Hi aagimob,  I haven't used Windows in years.  This new machine had a fresh Windows 7 installation.  This included an installation DVD and a genuine license key.  That installation lasted about 5 minutes.  When Windows told me not to turn off my machine because it was downloading updates - updates I hadn't asked for, viewed, or approved  >:(.  I honestly felt violated, so the plug was pulled and the partition was nuked without a second thought.  The wife is very happy with her new Windows 7 installation DVD though :D!!

Hi AndyInMokum,

Read my reply (above). If Peppermint Six was the first installation and its GRUB is in the MBR -- NO PROBLEMO !!

Just add the new installations to their own partitions, but when the installer asks where you should install GRUB, you put it in the partition of the new installation (e.g. in /dev/sda5). That way, the GRUB from Peppermint Six (in the MBR) will not be changed or touched in any way.

Then when finished reboot into Peppermint Six and in a terminal run:

Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
That should work without any further action on your part. If not, ask back here again, partner.  8)

Cheers Slim, I'm a little slow on the uptake today.  It was the: sudo update-grub I was forgetting.  Of course, it'll pickup the other installations and add them to GRUB menu - thanks mate  ;).

One distro goes on the MBR <-- This is the one that controls GRUB, call it the GRUB master distro if you will
(eg. /dev/sda)

All other distros you install GRUB to their partition
(eg. /dev/sda6)

you then boot the master distro, and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
The above is for BIOS systems only .. it's different for UEFI

Cheers Mark, I'm not using Windows so I've installed everything using Legacy mode.  There's less gymnastics involved.  Everything is working great  ;).

No worries Andy, I figured you already had the answer I just thought I'd lay it out for future searchers.

I wish I would have read this post a year or two ago. I always hated getting the grub of a distro I was checking out as the "master grub", especially Eclectica(?).

Glad to have reminded you of it then alynur was always a mystery to me, and part of why I have never distro-hopped before. Other than the fact Peppermint is so perfect, there's little need to bother thanks to PCNetSpec !?!

Now now Zeb, we all know you have a baby-pink Core i9 Hanna Montana gaming rig for your trucking .. just because you hide it under the desk when you're on BDLL doesn't fool us at all :))

At one point, I had five or six operating systems on one computer, but nowhere quite as many as Zeb. I had Windows (Vista or 7, don't really remember) and a bunch of Linux distros, including Peppermint One. :)

I know, right? My computer doesn't even have one. The front bezel has 3 120mm fans behind it.  8)
