Title: Dark Peppermint Six with White/Red accents and kwin...
Post by: GNULINUX on November 18, 2015, 04:22:27 pm
Hi,

New Peppermint (and Linux) user here and this is my first attempt to make Peppermint my own...
This is my main machine (dualboot with Windows 7).

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
[close]

I watched a few YouTube videos and read allot about the subject. Before I began I installed Timeshift and did a full backup.
In the end I didn't even need it!

Wallpaper:
Stock but I did give it a bit more red, used Pinta (http://pinta-project.com/howto/installing-pinta) to do it.

Conky:
I used conky manager and did some minor changing in the configuration files.
Tweaked some numbers to create more space between some lines and changed the color of some items.
Handy site to pic your colors : http://www.color-hex.com/

Plank:
As I didn't want icons on my desktop I installed plank (http://www.noobslab.com/2014/08/install-plank-dock-and-plank-themer.html) (without the themer).

Theme:
Peppermix-Dark on stock color settings. I did some small changes on the opacity Desktop Effects settings.
Pretty good out of the box!

Icons:
I wanted red... The Linux Help Guy syndrome I think... rave-x-color-icons (http://www.noobslab.com/2015/07/rave-x-colors-icons-suite-updated-for.html) in red of course...
If you want something else: http://www.noobslab.com/p/themes-icons.html#icons

Humor:
I always add a little bit of humor to the desktop, amor did the job.
(That's the little black cat that's running around my desktop.)
You can find it with the Software Manager.

I love the transparency in combination with the icons and the wallpaper.

I hope you like it as much as I do!
Any tips, comments or questions are welcome!

I've always liked the look of that red Peppermint wallpaper --as well as the look of its blue counterpart.  Both wallpapers have a clean and simple look that get in the way of nothing.  Nice work, GNULINUX, with the Peppermint red theme. :)

Hi GNULINUX,

That is very attractive! I'm like perknh: the red wallpaper (like you are using) and the blue variation of it are my favorites. I guess I'll try to come with a blue version of your desktop.  ;D

Well done!

Regards,

Well, GNULINUX, you got me to reintroduce Peppermint.jpg, Peppermint3_2.jpg, and PeppermintCold, to my lineup of changing wallpapers.

Thank's for reminding us all of these classic Peppermint wallpapers! ;)

I never really liked the Peppermint 3 default wallpaper .. but it's a wallpaper, and easily changed , I wasn't gonna go all Veggie about it :)

I actually started using Peppermint, in earnest, with Peppermint 3 --but on a flash drive.  I started with the white Peppermint 3 wallpaper before moving over to the red.  I do like the red (and blue) wallpapers better however.  Maybe the red (and blue) Peppermint wallpapers come from the first edition of Peppermint.

No, no need to veg over it.  We've got plenty of options here! :)

P.S.

I find it interesting that Veggie's "My Opinion" piece has made it to the Top Ten Topics (by Replies) in Peppermint forum.  If you think about it, that's really quite an achievement for a guy who shows up for work at Peppermint forum only once or twice a year! ;D

 Hi GNULINUX,

I'm a big fan of Terminator I and Terminator 2.  GNULINUX, you did a great job here with a darker theme.  A+ ;)

Also your desktop is a great reminder to all of us here at Peppermint to take better care of our teeth.  Terminators have shown us, time and time again, that if you really want to get away with murder, you had better have a truly fantastic smile! ;D

I have to admit these bits of eye candy work really well for demonstration purposes.  Especially when you show them to Windows users or even better, an ultra smug and self satisfied Mac user.  The looks on their faces are absolutely priceless  ;D.   I wouldn't use them on my everyday machines though.  I'm too much of a Lightweight Linux die hard - strip it down and run it hard and fast  ;).

kwin .. Jeez I bet that brought a truck load of heavyweight KDE dependencies with it.

Wouldn't compiz have been a better idea ?

Hey if it works for ya, it works right ;)

I'm just obsessive about keeping KDE stuff off my PC .. probably too much so .. it seems like you install one single teeny-tiny little KDE app and it drags in 90% of the whole KDE environment, immediately making your system heavier than if you'd just started with a KDE distro in the first place

No machine can be too powerful.... but they can be too expensive  lol

http://bit.ly/1QMixvR (http://bit.ly/1QMixvR) <<< mental price  -  goes to a custom build company - didnt want to advertise

That is a $%&ing stupid price for that spec.

When I saw the price I was expecting things like 4 CPU's and PCIe SSD cards, etc .. not a single i7, consumer grade SSD, and off the shelf components  :o
