Title: Popcorn Time -> Free TV & Movie Streaming [SOLVED]
Post by: madentaiwn on July 12, 2015, 09:28:58 pm
Hello everyone,

I read about Popcorn Time and found their website, https://popcorntime.io/  However, to try and watch anything, you have to download their beta app first. Since downloading and installing any thing outside of the software manager maybe bad, I want to see if anyone has tried this already?

Thanks

Best way to install popcorn time is via this PPA
https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/ubuntu/popcorntime (https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/ubuntu/popcorntime)

So open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:webupd8team/popcorntime
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install popcorn-time
the terminal will turn blue, when you see <OK> hit enter, when you see <Yes> <No> use the Tab key to highlight <Yes> in red, then hit enter .. wait for the command to complete and leave you at an $ prompt before closing the terminal.

you'll then find Popcorn Time in your menus at:-
menu > Internet > Popcorn Time

Hello,

I was able to complete the install and it went exactly as you described. However, when I click on popcorn time under menu-> internet, nothing happens.  No additional windows nor any software opened.  Did I miss something?

OK, something went wrong .. you should have a TON of stuff in the /opt/popcorn-time directory.

try running:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall popcorn-time
and copy the output from that command to a text file in case it fails again .. and if it does fail, post the output back here.

Sorry, I forgot to update. After a recent kernal update, popcorn time just "popped" out and started working. I actally haven't used it at all.  Stupid right? Trying to get it working but I haven't watched a single show from it.  I hope to get some uses out of it when I have to travel for work in September.

Thanks everyone.

Hello everyone,

Sorry to bring back this old post.  I recently installed PM6 on a old netbook and was using the above directions again to install popcorn time. However, I got this error:

Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:webupd8team/popcorntime'.
Please check that the PPA name or format is correct.

So my guess that that his repository no longer has the software?  Where else can I go to locate it?

Thanks

Wow  :o :o :o>:( >:( >:(

Now I know why all the popcorn time websites offer vpn deals to hid your ip.  Geez.....  I guess its only ok to use when I'm goofing off at work.  Not going to use it at home anymore.

thanks for the info.  Side bar question, how do you typically search for software in depositories?  Since I am fairly new, I only use the Software Manager to look for things.

Hello again,

Now that Popcorn Time is officially dead, I removed it using software manager.  However, I still get an error that the depository that contained popcorn time is unable to me found. How do I remove that depository?

Here is the error that I get when update manager runs

{Edit}
Nvm,  I found the repositories under synaptic package manager and unchecked any popcorn time related repositories.  Hey, I am actually learning to do stuff like a big boy now   8)
