Title: PM6 doesn't boot after installtion. [SOLVED]
Post by: lswarte on July 03, 2015, 04:53:50 pm
I am having this weird issue with the installation of PM6 on a desktop PC.

Previously I installed PM4 on this PC without any trouble. PM6 seems to install, everything goes flawless, but after rebooting nothing happens. The screen stays black and only a small white dash blinks in the upper left corner.

If reboot from USB and start Gparted it seems everything is 'normal' on the hard disk.

Anybody any ideas?

With kind regards,

If you hit and hold Shift after turning on the PC, do you get the GRUB menu ?

No, I do not get the GRUB menu.

But PM6 does start up when hitting the SHIFT key while switching on the PC.... and without using the SHIFT key :-\

It just boots very slow ... not what I am used to with PM  :D

What happened?

Thank you very much!

Dunno .. let's try get a handle on what's going on during the boot process.

Shut down your PC

Turn on your PC and wait for it to boot

Once booted open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg.txt
now host teh file dmesg.txt (on your desktop) somewhere online and provide a link to it .. so we can take a look at it.

You originally said you just got a flashing white underscore .. now you say it5 boots slowly.

Do you mean it sits at the underscore for ages before booting normally ? .. or the entire boot process seems slow ?

The dmesg.text is can be read here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_z_hkgck75LTnPepyW7kkBj9QptXA4OKroGGGzvbDj4/edit?usp=sharing).

Yes, at first I only saw a white underscore in the upper left corner of the screen.

After booting with the Shift key the white underscore is gone, and it boots without trouble. It is just slow, much slower than I am used to from PM, even thought it is on a machine with an old ATA disk.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi lswarte,
If you are not using the btrfs file system and you have not removed it from your system then at boot the process is quite slow. Do a forum search for btrfs-tools. There have been numerous posts telling you how to solve this issue by removing the btrfs-tools package (and also telling you how to do it properly).

I have thought about that as well. Unlike PM5 PM6 does not mention the scanning for btfrs files during boot up.

It is possible the message has been surpressed, but I am not sure about it. So I tried:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge btrfs-tools

sudo update-initramfs -ukall

It doesn't really improve boot up time. Between pushing the on/off switch and a screen ready for use is about 57 seconds ... perhaps I am spoiled  :D my laptop boots up in 14 seconds and my Windows 7 based laptop in 14 minutes ....  :P

Is it just me or does that dmesg output look incomplete ?

it stops at 26 seconds .. bear in mind that's 26 seconds from the starting of logging, but if it's complete that means it's doing something for 31 seconds prior to logging being started.

I made a new file, and this time it was 27 seconds. Not a significant difference ....

I haven't got a clue about what it is doing before logging. Sometimes I doubt about BIOS, but is is a rather new mobo: MSI FM2-A55M-E33 (MS-7721) and I never had any trouble with it ....

Well, I am happy it's working, and do not really mind the boot up time. For now it is OK, soon I will change this old desktop for an Intel NUC, so it is for a short period of time anyway.

Thank you for your help!

Talking about NUC's . Andy and I have been discussing the Gigabyte BRIX Projector .. a NUC alike with a Pico projector.

and

I'm pretty certain it's what the guy on MintCast 227 is now running Peppermint 6 on .. see around 1:20:00 of this MintCast

I *MUST* buy one of those !!!   8)

You know... I'm surprised Sony doesn't offer something like that.  They're the king of miniaturization.

EDIT

That one (above) only has 75 lumens   :o

If Sony did it, they'd have patented the idea and/or charged twice as much as anyone else  :o

Here's a top-rated ASUS 'pocket projector' with 200 lumens:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I3UTUNW

About the same price in the USA.

From the Amazon Reviews:
Quote
Some other notes:
The projector comes with a sleeve for the projector, a carrying case for the projector and power cord, an HDMI cable, an HDMI to micro USB cable, and a USB to micro USB cable.
It also comes with an ASUS 2 year limited warranty (though we are going to keep the Square Trade one we purchased).
It's power adapter looks like a black Apple laptop power adapter.
It sort of looks like a silver Apple TV

Okay, back on topic - sorry!

Yeah there's tons of mini projectors that connect to your PC .. but the BRIX is also a full i3 PC with a projector for roughly the same price

Aha!  Okay, I gotcha now.  I couldn't figure out why they categorized it as a 'barebone' on Amazon.   :-\

Interesting !!

I already have an Office 365 account that I use via Peppermint Ice.

Dude, you just cost me 300 bucks   200 bucks (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856164010) ...  :D
