Title: What's that in the top-left corner of the screen? (solved)
Post by: stefanreich on February 13, 2015, 10:17:43 am
Hi!

Since Peppermint 5, I always see something weird (always different stuff) in the top-left corner instead of the actual application icon...

See, for example, here:  http://tinybrain.de/1000157 (http://tinybrain.de/1000157)

Please advice. It looks weird and it confuses my desktop automation software... :-)

Cheers,
Stefan

Top left corner looks the same to me, except you drew a red box around everything on right side picture...  I can't see what you are trying to explain?

In the example, it SHOULD be the IntelliJ IDEA icon - and it is totally mangled.

Some other times, I am seeing the icon with what appears to be a black downward arrow behind it. Also proably not intended like this? Here: tinybrain.de/1000158 (http://tinybrain.de/1000158)

well at least i can see it now, it is pretty mangled up in the first pic but in the first pic off to the side where it says Project on a tab it looks just right...   :-\

Is it just in that one java app ?

All the apps it seems... sometimes the Firefox icon appears there even though Firefox is not in the foreground.

Another example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aBE7R_cuDM&feature=youtu.be)

How odd   :-\

There are  a few options that you can try....

a) removing the application icon from the top left of windows
run:
Code: [Select]
xfwm4-settingsand on the Style tab, under the Button Layout heading, drag the  "Menu" icon to the "Hidden" box below.

b) try a different Icon theme

c) try a different xfwm4 theme

d) try disabling compositing

Thanks for the hints. No changes so far. It seems like the corner is some kind of residue buffer. Even if I close all the windows, it stays as it is. If I click on it, whatever is actually there reacts (the desktop or a window).

How do I disable compositing?

Are you running a Lua script?

I was checking out the code in the OP and don't see any garbage collection taking place.

Hrm...   :-\

Are you talking about the Libre Office icon on the print dialog box?

Hi stefanreich, navigate to: menu > Preferences > Peppermint Control Center.  In the new window, select the: Desktop Effects tab.  Uncheck/untick the: Enable desktop effects box.  I hope this helps  ;).

Lua is not related to the icon problem...

Hm? I don't see the point actually... of course Lua has GC which is why I'm using it. :)

Hey! I think it helps... stuff looks normal now :)

So it's a problem between my graphics card and the drivers I presume?

I'll mark the question solved although it's a little sad that desktop effects have to go overboard... ^^

Thanks for the help

Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C display
