Title: Crunchbang disappearing ?
Post by: PCNetSpec on February 06, 2015, 09:07:30 pm
Philip Newborough (aka. corenominal) the developer of CrunchBang has decided that it's time to move on and leave it behind .. says:-

CrunchBang is something that I need to leave behind. Iím leaving it behind because I honestly believe that it no longer holds any value, and whilst I could hold on to it for sentimental reasons, I donít believe that would be in the best interest of its users, who would benefit from using vanilla Debian.

Sad news indeed :(
(probably the distro I'd have been using if Peppermint didn't exist)

Yup, this is really sad news indeed  :'(.  I really hope that the distro is picked up and maintained.  Crunchbang has become synonymous with Openbox elegance.  It really would be sad to see that disappear.  Crunchbang was one of the truly great distros  ;) #!

Edit My last Crunchbang desktop.

Crunchbang was simply stunning!!

Hi PCNetSpec and AndyInMokum,

I too find it sad that CrunchBang seems to be going away. But I have actually preferred the ArchBang distro as my experimental alternate (to Peppermint). I have been with it for quite some time now (several years) and it is been stable the entire time despite my almost daily updates (when a new kernel version appears I usually wait 2-3 days before upgrading just to see if anyone reports problems that seem to be serious).

Anyway ... it's worth checking out ArchBang as an alternative to CrunchBang. It has been more stable for me than Manjaro (another Arch derivative).

Regards,

Hi Slim.Fatz, when I get a spare machine, I might give ArchBang a spin.  I'm not a huge Arch fan, (except for their Wiki  ;)).  I find the constant updates hard work.  If you get behind just a little bit,  you're doomed it seems  :'(.  I'm certainly going to consider it though.  If for nothing else, just as an experiment.

AndyInMokum:

That's exactly the way I see and use it: an experiment. I also learn more about Linux without risking my stable work environment (Peppermint).  8)

I was just over at GitHub and noticed:

Looks like Bunsen Labs to going to pick up the CrunchBang project...

AFAIK neither Bunsen Labs or Crunchbang++ (https://crunchbangplusplus.org/) are official continuations of crunchbang (?)

So are they just trying to cash in on the name/community ?

The Crunchbang community have been talking about doing this since Philip Newborough, (corenominal) pulled the plug on #! : A community continuation: Bunsen Labs Linux (http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=39049) .  From what I have read in the forum.  They have rejected Crunchbang++ as an opportunistic interloper.  There was a thread on the forum that had now been removed.  I like that they are keeping with the Muppets names: Statler and Waldorf.  I guess the new fork is named after Dr Bunsen Honeydew.  All the best to them because Crunchbang was not only an iconic Linux distro.  It was a superb Linux distro  ;).

I'm happier about the one that's not using the Crunchbang name .. in the same way as to me AC/DC was Bon Scott, so as good as they were with Brian Johnson they were not AC/DC.

I believe Philip Newborough has specifically asked that the name Crunchbang be laid to rest.  I have to agree with you.  The Bon Scott era was the real AC/DC >:D!!
