It absolutely is worth installing, I wouldn't be without it

a while ago I screwed up my system big time and if it wasn't for Timeshift it would have been a complete re-installation

Timeshift is very easy to use it can be set for scheduled backups daily, weekly or monthly or just manual, it works in the background and it's there if and when you need it

Timeshift is one of the first programs I install with a fresh system, I see it as an insurance policy and wouldn't be without it

Good luck

Boy, do you guys know how to pitch a program, or what?

I've already installed the program, and completed my first snapshot of Peppermint!  :)

What a great idea!  ;)

Thanks.

i installed it and when setttting up 'restore points' or whatever this program calls it it was eating away at my HD space which already was only 50 free gigs on an 80 gig hd.
so i removed it but now evn after doing so the space didn't come back :( this was the kind of thing i was afraid of anyway to get my space back???

HI  iamesperambient

How have you configured your settings ?

You can delete any extra snapshots you dont require by going into Settings and deleting any selected snapshot, You can also configure Timeshift to save snapshots on an external drive which I think is really the best option.

although you've removed Timeshift, the snapshots will still be there, you'll find them  at /timeshift simply delete that folder to remove the snapshots get your space back then empty the Trash folder

Good luck

OK try

Code: [Select]
sudo pcmanfm /

that will give you root access, look for the timeshift folder then right click and delete

Good luck

i installed timeshift and did a system restore (snapshot) whatever and it basically took up my HD space
from 53 to 39 now. I can't seem to remove it. I tried to go into super user mode and now the file for timeshift is stuck
in my bin and i can not delete it. What can i do to empty my bin and get back my HD space?

Ok it wont delete from the Trash because it's a system folder and you don't have permissions you'll need to change the folder permissions I'll work out how to that and get back to you

If you've moved the /timeshift folder to trash Timeshift won't be able to find them, normally the snapshots are visible in the main window when you open it

you would normally delete individual snapshots by highlighting a snapshot the clicking "Delete" at the top

When i figure out how to delete thetimeshift folder from the Trash I'll post back

i just want my space fee again. It would have been nice to have a back up but my HD is so small
i dont think its really possible with this laptop.

Ok try this

Code: [Select]
sudo  pcmanfm .local/share/Trash/files

a folder should open with timeshift inside if so right click & delete

did that work ?

Correction do not right click and delete (that's not an option) instead shift+delete on the keyboard

i can right click and move back into the trash but theres no actual 'delete' option. basically what it does is just add it back to the trash. :(

Glad you got the space back

Timeshift may not be such a good idea on a laptop with limited disc space I use it on my desktop with 320GB and I only keep 4 weekly snapshots so that's not a problem but if you had a fairly large external hard drive it wouldn't do any harm to use that and it wouldn't take up any of your disc space.

I've no idea where you 8GB has gone

Sorry for the confusion I caused I struggle with terminal commands sometimes so quite often find myself doing things the hard way

no worries in the end you helped me a great deal and i appreciate it :D
i may revisit timeshift when i purchase a new laptop in the next 2 months
which will have 500 gigs of space on it :D
