Hello iamesperambient,

I configured my computer to boot Peppermint 5 on an external hard drive first, and then, if I wish, I can go to Lubuntu as my second option.  I'm telling you this because I wanted to see if this was only happening to us in Peppermint, or if this was happening to anyone using Ubuntu, or its derivatives.

I can now tell you this seems to be happening to anyone using Ubuntu and its derivatives.

Therefore,  iamesperambient, I've had the chance to reality test what you've said, and you're right.  I, too, have not been notified of updates in Peppermint 5, and the same is true for Lubuntu.  And I had updates for both distributions too -- as you have had.

Therefore, this appears to me to be an Ubuntu issue that we, at Peppermint, are inheriting.

These updates, thankfully, don't appear, at this moment, to be security updates, but I am having the same update problem too -- so your misery has company!   ;)

I think either PCNetSpec, or Kendall, will know what is happening here, but I've tested your concern, and I have experienced it also.

Let's see what PCNetSpec, or Kendall, says about this new, and interesting issue.

By the way, I've never seen, or had, a dull moment at Peppermint.  This is one reason why I love this forum -- and why it remains my favorite place on the web.  There's life here at Peppermint forum -- thank goodness!  :)

Thank you for telling us about this issue.

thanks for the checking in hopefully the issue will be resolved. At least manually i'm still able to get the updates but a notification again would be
much better as i tend to forget.

After posting I checked if my wife's computer, which is running only Peppermint, has the same issue, and it does.

I imagine they'll sort this out over at Ubuntu, and the fix will come right through the pipeline to us here at Peppermint.

By the way, did you run the command: sudo apt-get upgrade?

There's an upgrade available for us too.

Irun Ubuntu 14.04 and don't have a problem with automatic updates.

Hi Degsy, please be careful of making duplicate postings!!  I've removed the duplicate entry this time.  Many thanks  ;).

Degsy, this is interesting.  Can we have a Lubuntu issue with updating, and not an Ubuntu issue also?

Maybe iamesperambient and I just needed to wait a little longer and the updates would have come through for us automatically like they normally do.

I'm stumped!  :-\

I haven't replied yet as this doesn't seem to affect everyone and so far I haven't got to the root of the issue .. indeed I'm receiving update notifications as expected on my systems  :o

Emegra on the other hand gets notifications on 'some' of his PC's and not on others .. yet so far we can find no consistent differences or fixes between them  :-\

Modifying the sources.list worked on 2 of Emegras PC's but apparently not on a third.
(even though the modified sources.list had the same entries .. just laid out differently  :-\ )

Someone else changed non-security updates to "daily" .. then rebooted (and was notified of updates) .. then switched back to "weekly" .. but this also doesn't work consistently (didn't work on Emegra's last PC).

Personally I think Ubuntu's update manager has been broken in a few different ways (at least) since 13.04
For a lot of people the
Software & Updates > Updates (tab) > tickboxes
aren't tickable .. yet the repositories ARE enabled in the sources.list, and for some reason are showing u under the "Other Software" tab
(BTW, I don't think this issue is related to the update notification issue)

I'm trying to backtrack how it all slots together (bit of a maze), but I'm beginning to think it's more of a software issue than a configuration one.

If I find a solution, and it's fixable with an update, it will be done .. until  then you'll have to manually update.
(that said, it's hard to dissect an issue you're unable to replicate)

Meanwhile if anyone comes across any useful info about this issue, please let me know :)

Can someone (iamesperambient) who has this issue post the output from:

Here we go, PCNetSpec.  This is the output from three of our hard drives, one of which is from Lubuntu.  You'll be able to compare them to iamesperambient's output when he's back online.

Here's the output from my external hard drive which is running Peppermint 5 -- minus my wife's name:

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
*****@bluecat ~ $ ps aux | grep pdate-notifier
*****    1652  0.0  0.2 597016 15028 ?        Sl   11:29   0:00 update-notifier
*****@bluecat ~ $
[close]

Here's the output from my wife's computer which is running only Peppermint 5 -- minus her name again:

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
*****@Shanghai ~ $ ps aux | grep pdate-notifier
*****    1675  0.0  0.1 597156 13320 ?        Sl   11:48   0:00 update-notifier
****@Shanghai ~ $
[close]

And this is from Lubuntu 14.04 -- which is on my computer's internal hard drive:

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
*****@bluecat:~$ ps aux | grep pdate-notifier
*****    1639  0.0  0.2 634084 14896 ?        Sl   11:56   0:00 update-notifier
*****@bluecat:~$
[close]

I should add something here.  I've noticed lately that I can manually run sudo apt-get update in the terminal, and after doing this run the software updater, and the software updater will then show me what is available to update, and ask me, if I'd like to update now.  It's as if updating -- not upgrading -- in the terminal had had no effect when I had just previously run it.

This has only been happening to me for a week or so.  And I also had this strange issue with updating 12 days ago:

http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,1081.msg9264.html#msg9264 (http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,1081.msg9264.html#msg9264)

my p5 machine never auto updates either, every week on Saturday i manually scan for updates with the manager, and it finds them and does its job... But it never pops up and warns me ever of any updates by itself...   I always wanted to ask why did you ever stop using the update manager you had in Pep3 which worked great and sat by the clock all the time with a check mark for good and an ! for updates...  simple working one just like linux mint had, I swear it was mints updater they looked the same....

Okay, I'll play guinea pig,  my system is doing the same as perknh's.  I'm well backed up if it all goes belly up  :).

[EDIT]

Final instruction for installing mintupdate can be found here:
http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?topic=1104.msg10003#msg10003 (http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?topic=1104.msg10003#msg10003)

[END EDIT]

I've been testing it myself and can't see any reason why it should be risky .. that said no promises here :)

Currently running it with update-manager still installed (it seems happy enough for both to be installed), but later I'll try removing update-manager.

Here it is:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/mintupdate_4.6.7%2Bpeppermint5_all.deb
(it's the standard Mint 17 version of mintupdate with the mint-common and mint-mirrors dependencies removed)
just download and double-click to install

Once installed, go to
menu > System Tools > Update Manager
Close the window that opens
You should now have a system tray icon (shield) .. right-click that shield, and select refresh .. if there are updates available, they should show up.

Also test that the system tray icon starts automatically after logging off/on or rebooting.

The above file is for both 32bit and 64bit Peppermint 5 (I've only tested it in 32bit so far though)

It works for me, and the offered updates tallied with what update-manager was offering.

For now, leave update-manager installed .. I'll post back here after I've tested with it removed .. but I need to wait for some more updates to come through.

Removal should be as simple as:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge mintupdate

[EDIT]

Please let me know if that displays update notifications properly, where update-manager doesn't.

That's up and running.  I've no outstanding updates because I did a manual one earlier.  We'll find out if it works on my 64bit rig in a few day I guess.  I'll keep you posted  ;).

It is not working for me on Pep5, It keeps saying I am up to date, yet i did not run since last Saturday any updates, and when I opened the update manager it says I have several updates totaling 69.1 megs...  However it did install and work like you said it is sitting by the clock with a green check mark...  :)

Ok Mark, it is now working after I fiddled with it a bit, I had to go into the preferences and check-mark a few things and apply, now it is working as it should, and showing the same updates as the original updater...  Kudos to Mark and a high five too...  Buy that man a beer and a box of farley's rusks...  ;)

do you think this bug will be fixed??? its not that big of a deal as i'm still able to update but it was odd it just stopped randomly one day giving me the notifications.
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: rjm65 on October 15, 2014, 07:36:20 pm
Upon closer inspection they are not the same, the original updater shows me 69 megs of updates and the mint updater only is showing me 6 megs of updates the one file missing in the mint updater is a 65.5 meg file called ubuntu base which is not showing up in mint updater, but everything else seems to be there...  I am not going to do any updates till you can determine what is different between the two, I will keep it as is and be the Guinna pig....

Can anyone that's installed this please remove it with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge mintupdate
then re-download the file:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/mintupdate_4.6.7%2Bpeppermint5_all.deb
and double click it to install

I made a couple of changes, so it contains the peppermint mirros rather than the LinuxMint ones

Don't panic if you've already installed any updates with it ;)

Anyone installing this after the time it was posted, please ignore this posting as I've fixed the link above too.

@rmj65

Have you ticked level 4 and 5 updates to make them visible ?

Mintupdate has a habit of marking things like kernel updates as not to be installed unless you specifically tick the box to make them visible .. then either manually select them or select them as "Safe" so they're ticked by default.

Did that make sense
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: rjm65 on October 15, 2014, 07:49:40 pm
gimme a few minutes I am uninstalling it now...

OK it is still the same mark it is showing I have updates but only 6 megs worth not 69 megs like the original one...
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: rjm65 on October 15, 2014, 07:51:10 pm
that is what i had to tick in preferences to get it to work in the first place i ticked 4 and 5 on the safe side and clicked apply, and i did go back and undo that and then it didn't work at all again, so i re-ticked them and it works once more...
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating

@rmj65

Have you right-clicked the shield icon and told it to "Refresh" ?

Can you also refresh the default update-manager .. and see if they tally now ?

You could also run a simulated update from the command line:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get -s upgrade
and see if the list of files the simulation says would have been installed tallies with what minupdate is offering
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: rjm65 on October 15, 2014, 08:06:33 pm
when i refresh from the shield i get up to date...  i have to manually open it and click refresh inside to get any updates....
and then they do not match....

well its time for me to log off for the evening, I hope someone helps you figure it out if not I'll be back in 12 hours...
its really flakey on my machine if i close the manager out and refresh by shield i get up to date...  then when i open the manager i get up to date now too, i have to go into preferences and uncheck the boxes and apply then i get a list again then i go in and recheck and list remains....  its totally weird...  maybe we can teamview it tomorrow and you can play with it Mark...  I have nothing on the laptop but P5 fresh install for testing purposes....

if you run:
Code: [Select]
ls -l /etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate
the output should be similar to:-

-r--r----- 1 root root 180 Jun 20 08:40 mintupdate

If it has anything other than "root root" .. then follow the instructions below:-

Right-click on the shield system tray icon and select "Quit"

Now run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge mintupdate
then
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/Desktop/MintUpdate
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/Desktop/MintUpdate
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/mintupdate_4.6.7%2Bpeppermint5_all.deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Now run
Code: [Select]
ls -l /etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate
again, and check for the "root root"

That seems to be working.  I received an update and both the Mintupdate and Peppermint update showed up.  The basically corresponded with each other.  I installed the update via the Peppermint updater.  Strange how now that after installing the Mintupdater, the Peppermint updater also decides to function.

Yeah that is kinda silly but Mine is now working also after the mint updater was installed...  However mine disagree and I did what mark suggested and updated using mint then see what is left over and there is like 12 files totaling 2.5 megs leftover...

Yeah, its weird the way the Peppermint updater suddenly sprang into life after installing the Mint one. I'm wondering if the discrepancies in file size could because different mirrors are being used to source the repos.  My Peppermint updates come from a local server here in The Netherlands.  I don't know where the Mint ones are being sourced from  :-\.

I've just noticed something odd.  Since I installed mintupdate for testing.  I just noticed the network monitor icon has vanished from the panel.  I only noticed it was gone because I was going to use a VPN.  It was fine yesterday.  I rebooted the machine and it is still not present.  I don't know if this is related to the mintupdate package or if it coincidental.  Kind of useful to have it back though  :).

mintupdate should be using the same sources as update-mamanger

/etc/apt/sources.list
and any files at
/etc/apt/sources.list.d

Hi Mark, on checking both update-manager and mintupdate are using mirrors here in The Netherlands.  It was just a thought  :-\.  The output you requested is short and sweet - nada, not a sausage:
Code: [Select]

Let's see what happens if we put a 10 second delay in the starting of mintupdate

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/autostart/mintupdate.desktop
find the line that reads:-
Code: [Select]
Exec=mintupdate-launcher
and change it to
Code: [Select]
Exec=bash -c "sleep 10 ; mintupdate-launcher"
SAVE the file

Log off/on to test

does nm-applet start now ?

I'm reporting in with some good news.

This is the first day for me, since we began discussing updating problems, that the updater on this computer displayed itself in the Peppermint's lower panel as having updates.  Therefore, the updater for Peppermint 5 appears to working again on this C-70 Toshiba laptop!

They must be fixing some things over there at Ubuntu.  :)

I did notice on the 21st Oct 2014 there were updates for:-
software-properties-gtk
python3-software-properties
software-properties-common

maybe these fixed something :)

Since installing Mintupdate, everything seems to be behaving here.  The updates are showing up and the the Mint shield in the panel is displaying them.

I don't recommend you do that for the moment.  It is VERY much an experiment a few of us are doing?  The last post was just feedback for PCNetSpec.  If it becomes a permanent safe alternative to the default updater, PCNetSpec will make an announcement.

I can see zero issues with having them both installed at the same time (mintupdate and update-manager) .. but I'm currently still testing with ONLY mintupdate .. I'll post back once I'm sure it works properly.

@iamesperambient

Let me know if you want to try having both installed whilst I test it on its own

Download this file:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/mintupdate_4.6.7%2Bpeppermint5_all.deb (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/mintupdate_4.6.7%2Bpeppermint5_all.deb)
and double-click it to install

Once installed, go to
menu > System Tools > Update Manager
then close the window that just opened.

You should now have a system tray icon (shield) .. right-click that shield icon and select "Preferences" .. on the "Levels" (tab) make sure ALL boxes are ticked under the "Safe?" and "Visible ?" columns

Also make sure the 2 boxes:-
Always show security updates
Always select and trust security updates

are ticked

In short .. make sure ALL 12 boxes on the "Levels" tab are ticked.

and click "Apply"

then close the Preferences window.

Note - Ignore the fact that Mint use the words "Unsafe" and  "Dangerous" .. the default Ubuntu/Peppermint policy is to install ALL updates .. you already chose the PPA's and sources so why should the updater subvert your choices.
(quite why Mint are so paranoid is beyond me)

Right click the shield icon again and select "Refresh" .. if there are updates available, they should show up.

Also test that the system tray icon starts automatically after logging off/on or rebooting.

The Mint Updater will check every half hour for updates .. for the short while it's checking for updates the shield icon will be a blank shield (actually I think there are little grey gears n it but they're hard to makke out).

If there are NO available updates, the shield will show a green tick

if there ARE updates the shield will display a blue circle .. in this case click the shield, and when MintUpdate opens, click the "Install Updates" button.

[EDIT]

I now consider MintUpdate 100% tested and working, so once you're happy mintupdate is working, feel free to uninstall update-manager:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge update-manager
(this is NOT necessary, the system will be quite happy with both update-manager AND mintupdate installed .. it's completely up to you if you want to remove update-manager)

To Undo
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends update-manager
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge mintupdate

I'm on the trot, today.  Haven't used this P5 'road warrior' for 2-3 weeks.

First stop I made, I connected to a WiFi hotspot, and...

The auto-updater is working fine.

Been so long since I turned this on, the BASH update was in the list.

I'll investigate this later, e.g. why mine didn't break.

Just saying...

Nope:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge mintupdate
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install update-manager
that second command is only necessary if you've unistalled update-manager .. but it won't hurt to run it if you're not sure, it will just tell you you already have the latest version.

OK, for those that are running both mintupdate and update-manager .. if you want to, feel free to uninstall update-manager.

I've been testing mintupdate on its own for a while now and it appears to be fine.

Take your pick between  mintupdate, update-manager, or both .. your choice ;)
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: iamesperambient on October 28, 2014, 12:08:55 pm
so i woke up this morning with updates from both.
the reason why i think i wanna keep both is mint updater had way more updates
and the default one only had one update called 'ubuntu base' but doesn't really tell me
whats in the update mint update shows every single update thats needed.

I want to keep both in case each one has different updates.
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: PCNetSpec on October 28, 2014, 01:01:55 pm
"ubuntu base" would have covered the other updates as sub items .. it's just the way it displays things .. but it would have installed exactly the same packages

Still .. your choice :)

ok that works for me than how do i uninstall the  default one i prefer the mint updater's set up way better and seems more stable.

Hi iamesperambient, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
apt remove --purge update-manager -y
Enter your password if asked and hit enter.

That should do it  ;)!!

Yup, they are interchangeable  :).

was the default updater designed specifically for peppermint or was it also taken from linux mint or lubuntu? just curious?
Title: Re: autoupdater not updating
Post by: PCNetSpec on October 28, 2014, 02:32:42 pm
update-manager is the default for Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu and pretty much any distro based on them

Mint decided to do their own .. but as AndyInMokum suggests they're interchangeable (with a small tweak to the mintupdate package)

They both use the same underlying technology (apt/dpkg) ;)

Here's an interesting observation.

My external hard drive, on which I run Peppermint 5, now updates automatically -- just like it should.  And my wife's labtop, a Toshiba C-50, which runs only Peppermint 5, does the same.  ;)

However my internal hard drive, on my Toshiba C-70 laptop, which runs Lubuntu's 14.04, still does not auto-update for me.

How the heck can I have both Peppermint 5 installations update perfectly from Ubuntu, and not have my Lubuntu installation doing the same -- especially since the updates it is receiving are coming straight from Ubuntu itself?

This makes no sense to me.  :-\

This isn't much of a problem for me, but, nonetheless, I don't understand why this is happening .

Any guesses?

Thank you,

perknh

Any guesses?

Nope .. If I knew what's causing it, I'd have fixed it ;)

I can make little sense of it either .. All *my* PC's are fine, but some clients aren't  .. But I cannot find a common denominator, and don't have enough time with their PC's to troubleshoot it  :-\
(I'm currently just bunging mintupdate on my clients PC's)

There's also the issue where some PC's aren't able to select t5he boxes on the "Updates" tab of "Software & Updates" even though they should already display as ticked because the repos ARE active in their sources.list (not sure if tese are related issues)

Would help if one of my PC's had the problem .. then I'd probably have time to figure it out.

Thank you, PCNetSpec,

I reported the issue to Lubuntu by sharing our thread.

We'll see what comes of it.

I'm surprised more people haven't already reported this .. I see it as a MAJOR security issue, specially considering some people won't have automatically received the "bash bug" patches.

I knew there was a reason I don't bother with the Ubuntu forum any more....

They've moved it to "chat"  ::)

I see it as a MAJOR security issue, specially considering some people won't have automatically received the "bash bug" patches.

It is an extremely serious issue.  I bet a lot of people have important security updates available to them and don't even know there's a problem.  Not everybody who uses Linux these days is comfortable working with the terminal.

They've moved it to "chat"  ::) -- PCNetSpec

First of all, I find Ubuntu forum a very difficult place to navigate.  And I figure there can't be just a few of us with this update manager problem either.  But, according to Ubuntu, only eleven people, including myself, have reported that this bug affects them.  But logic tells us, from our Peppermint forum discussions alone, that a lot more than eleven people are experiencing this problem.  It's a serious issue.

So why aren't more bugs being reported?  I figure people don't know how -- myself included.  I would never have found that page without you sharing that link.  And, I searched before posting.  I really did.

Chatting will not help enough in resolving Ubuntu's update manager problem.

Thank you,

perknh

P.S.

Lubuntu Doesn't Auto Update But a Spinoff Does

I like your title better than mine, but I can't change the title over at Ubuntu.  The gist of the thread now seems more concerned about protocol than resolving the issue itself.

I'm not saying protocol isn't important, or my first post at Ubuntu went perfectly, but what happened to the issue?  :-\

I apologized and asked them to move the tread to Support.  I wonder if they'll do so.

IMHO, the Ubuntu forum though a great place for info (if you know how to separate the wheat from the chaff), has become a miserable place to 'take part', which is a pity.
(bare in mind this is not a reflection on Ubuntu itself .. probably more a reflection on how difficult it is to keep a forum that size a friendly place with a "community" feel)

mint updater seems to be working fine after a redays of removing default and installing it.
As for now im sticking with that it seems much more stable.

it certainly is a security issue and something they should make number 1 on the priority fix list.

Amen to that!  ;)

That was quite an experience for me at the Ubuntu forum today. I wanted to start out short and sweet and see how things would go.  Well... :-X

I figured I've done my Scout's Duty over there!  Now it's up to them to figure what to do about it.  At least they've been notified of the problem.  They know now that my computer auto-updates in Peppermint, but not in Lubuntu.

Somebody at Ubuntu might eventually find that point interesting.

At least I do anyway!

Thank you PCNetSpec and iamesperambien.

They've closed the topic .. and I must admit the moderator (coffecat) that closed it kinda has a point.

It would probably have been helpful if you'd described the issue you were having with Lubuntu, and asking for help resolving the issue  .. it *might* have been helpful to link to this topic for reference, but the posting should really have described the Lubuntu issue.
(throwing Peppermint into the mix in the FIRST posting was probably not the best way to ask for help on the Ubuntu/Lubuntu forum ;) .. it might have come across a bit "Peppermint is doing something better than Lubuntu" and somewhat confused matters)

BTW, Peppermint *does* suffer the same bug for *some* users .. nobody seems to have been able so far to put teir finger on what's causing it, when, and under what circumstances  :-\
(but the fact is, Peppermint and Lubuntu both suffer the same bug as they share the same method for receiving update notifications)

It most certainly is a major security risk.  I feel sorry for anyone that gets knobbled by it.  They have put their faith in Ubuntu.  Ubuntu needs to respond to that faith with responsible development rather than chasing this "mobile pipe dream".  The development team at Canonical must be aware of the issue.  It beggars belief that it hasn't been made "Priority One".  Also, letting an issue of this magnitude perpetuate is beyond irresponsible.  It is plain sloppy and it could very easily irreparably undermine the reputation of Ubuntu.  Ubuntu is synonymous with Linux so the knock on effects could be disastrous for the greater Linux community.  I really hope they get their act together and better prioritise their responses towards bugs.  That's enough of me with my gloomy hat on for one evening :(.

I'm *guessing* the lack of people moaning about it on the Ubuntu forums (and the rest of the web) means it's working properly in Ubuntu (?), but it's hard to say as it doesn't affect everyone, so who knows how widespread this is  :-\

As it's a "bug" rather than just something you don't know how to do, it's probably best addressed on Launchpad than the Ubuntu forum anyway.

But be aware, mentioning a downstream distro is likely to just make them switch off, even where it's not warranted .. it just gives them an excuse to shift blame in the name of "confusion" ;)

switching to mint updater was an easy work around, but naively it should work! not receiving security updates
is a HUGE  risk!!!!! hopefully this gets resolved.

My goodness, iamesperambient!

autoupdater not updating is now the number 1 topic by replies at Peppermint forum.  That fact, by itself says how important this issue is.  Fortunately Peppermint 5's automatic updater is working perfectly for us here again.  In fact, it's showing me we've new updates as I'm posting this!  :)

im using the mint updater now i dont have the default one installed anymore.
mint updater seems to be working im still unsure if it REALLY gives me the same updates
as the default one. its hell to tell im more concerned with getting security updates promptly
than anything else.

it *WILL* be giving you the same updates as the default updater .. they BOTH use the same apt backend and repositories.

ok it seems to be working still so i have more faith in using mint updater as of now once default is fixed i will probably go back to using that one.

just to update i reinstalled the default updater just now and tried to run an update got the message something like 'failed to download from repositories, check your connection' needless to say ill be sticking  with mint updater i suppose.

That sounds like a different problem (that would probably affect mintupdate too)  .. Do you get any errors from:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
?

something must be wrong :( because after running this update this weird glitch with my theme totally went away maybe something wasn't installed or accidentally removed?

There is nothing wrong there.  Try running in sequence:
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgrade -y
Code: [Select]
apt dist-upgrade -y
Reboot your system.  Good luck  ;).

Nope, nothing wrong, and FYI that was NOT an update .. it just updated the package cache, not any installed software .. the only reason I asked you to run it was to see if you had a problem with your sources, which you don't.

Anyway .. I'm now 100% convinced mintupdate works as it should, so can we now stop using this topic as a catchall for anything "updater" related .. and only post here if it's to do with automatic updates not coming through.

If you start another topic for any other updater issue and are using mintupdate rather than update-manager, lease make that clear.
