Title: very slow internet on Peppermint (no longer solved?)
Post by: kskarda on September 27, 2014, 06:35:31 am
Hey all,

I just installed Peppermint OS on my husband's netbook today. It is an Acer Aspire One D270-1375. It runs on the Intel Atom (sadly), has been upgraded to 2 GB RAM and has 320 GB HDD.

I decided to install Peppermint given how ridiculously bogged down it was with Windows. I figured Peppermint OS would be a great way to lighten it up.

Unfortunately, it's just not working for me yet. It always shows internet connectivity, but the internet does not consistently pull up in either Chromium or elsewhere.

I've already installed the proprietary Broadcom driver.

I have run sudo apt-get update, but I get a lot of error messages. Unfortunately, I cannot show them, because I am having to send this from my computer, but here's an example:

Err http://th.archive.ubuntu.com trusty Release.gpg
Could not resolve 'th.archive.ubuntu.com'

I've run sudo apt-get upgrade (I suppose, it's only limitedly useful given that update doesn't run), and it takes an excruciatingly long time--also with some error messages (right now, I'm stuck on my last effort at the update, so I can't tell you the exact wording).

When I've quit trying, there are moments when the internet works, and Peppermint is as snappy as I hoped. It just comes and goes. Thoughts anyone?

If not yet obvious yet, I'm quite new to Linux in general, so I may be overlooking the obvious.

[Also, our internet connection is quite strong otherwise. Even on Windows 7, he had no problem with that, and I currently have no problem on my computer (running on Elementary OS).]

Can you open a terminal and post the output from this command:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network

Remember, Linux commands ARE case sensitive, so that's a capital C

Sure, how do I take screen shots in Peppermint? The computer is currently not accessing the internet, so I can't copy and paste the output, but if I have an image, I'll use a USB to transfer it to a computer with internet.

I don't see a way to do a screen shot, so I'm going to type it out and try to be careful that there are no typos.

Can you post the output from:

What is the symbol between the "-nn" and the "grep" and how do I reproduce it (without copy/paste)?

Okey dokey .. this device should work out of the box with the brcmsmac/bcma drivers (which are contained in the kernel).

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r wl
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe brcmsmac
?

I'm expecting wireless to die after the first command .. and come back to life after the second

FYI - If necessary, a reboot will get you back to where you are now

Post by: kskarda on September 27, 2014, 08:57:05 am
Okay, interesting... the first command killed it as you expected. The second command, however, caused it to start "thinking" (as in, the dreaded little circling spinning forever on end where the wifi signal ought to be shown) only to still end with telling me I am disconnected. Now, there is no internet connection whatsoever.

OK, try this:
run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add these 3 NEW lines at the bottom
Code: [Select]
blacklist b43
blacklist ssb
blacklist wl
SAVE the file, and close gedit.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modules
and add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads
Code: [Select]
brcmsmac
SAVE the file and close gedit.

REBOOT.

Does wireless work after the reboot ?
Title: Re: very slow internet on Peppermint
Post by: kskarda on September 27, 2014, 09:11:13 am
Okay, I did as you said, but after the reboot, it returned to the spinning circle and finally letting me know it's disconnected.

It can still *see* all the wireless networks in the area, but it simply will not connect.

If it provides any clues, when I first loaded tried Peppermint out on the USB drive, I was quite impressed with its speed, and there were no connectivity issues. It was only after it installed that something went wrong.

Do you know your routers IP address ?

and do you know how to set a static IP in networkmanager ?

I do know my router's address, but I do not know how to set a static IP in networkmanager. Is there a tutorial I should read?
Title: Re: very slow internet on Peppermint
Post by: PCNetSpec on September 27, 2014, 09:35:33 am
I'l walk you through it in a bit, but first let's try something...

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf
and add a single new line at the bottom that reads:-
Code: [Select]
send vendor-class-indentifier "MSFT 5.0";
SAVE the file.

REBOOT.

Did wireless connect this time ?

No file came up. It says:

sudo: /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf: command not found

My mistake, I forgot to add "gedit" in that command  :-[

Command fixed in my last posting .. so please try again.

The internet bar is up, and it says 98%! Web pages are loading normally!

On a side note, before I rebooted the computer, the Terminal had this message:

Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by an .service files.

Should I be worried?
Title: Re: very slow internet on Peppermint
Post by: PCNetSpec on September 27, 2014, 10:03:31 am
No, that's nothing to worry about, and can be safely ignored...

Peppermint doesn't use the gnome session manager .. it's NOT an issue, just a warning that gedit couldn't find it :)

gedit will throw up this error in any distro that doesn't use the gnome session manger .. Which pretty much means any distro that doesn't use the gnome desktop ::)

Don't Panic
(and always carry a towel)

;)

Okey dokey .. after a day or so, can you please let me know if it's still working with a strong signal .. just as a matter of interest.

I expect it will be, but you never know.

Oh, and you're welcome :)

Good news: Wifi is still working great! As to the strength, it's now staying around 80-89% (though technically I am actually sitting right next to the router). It feels very responsive, and there's very little to no delay when pulling up webpages or internet based apps. Well done, sir.

Thanks for taking the time to post the feedback kskarda .. now I know it works, I can commit it to memory for the next time it comes up....

Of course that assumes my memory (which recently resembles a sieve) is capable of holding it that long  :o

Hi PCNetSpec,

I am afraid I must have been a little too enthusiastic. Shortly after I wrote you, the problem began again, though I haven't had time to deal with it yet. The internet does still work, but it cuts out frequently with the "aw, snap" page or the "This webpage is not available" page. No videos or websites involved higher connection can be viewed. The internet cuts in and out, sometimes entirely unavailable for several minutes (though always showing an internet connection) and some completely usable, except for to watch videos and such (previously my husband was able to watch videos without a problem, which tells me there should not be a plugin problem). At the moment, the connection is 60% , but we're not right next to the router, and I would not expect it to be very high. However, even being right next to the router does not seem to help. Any advice?

Kara

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep flash
and next time it won't let you browse the web, run:
Code: [Select]
ping -c 5 google.com
and
Code: [Select]
ping -c 5 74.125.230.231
and post tbhe output from both.

As you're going to be doing this when it won't let you browse, it may be best to copy these commands to a file whist it will ;)
(sorry if that seemed a little obvious)

At the moment, the internet is basically working (albeit not excellently), so I've only done the first of the three you gave me.

Here's the output:
ii  pepperflashplugin-nonfree            1.3ubuntu1                             i386         Pepper Flash Player - browser plugin

I'll be waiting for the chance to use the other two.

You've got a lot of packets falling to the floor.   :o

A spray test might help to pinpoint the prob.

I've used this one for years:  http://www.dslreports.com/pingtest

I see no excessive transmit/receive errors between the wireless card and your router .. so I still think this is an encryption issue.

Can you TEMPORARILY disable wireless encryption in your router and see if that makes a difference.

You can re-enable it after testing.

At the moment, we are visiting friends, so we can't mess with their router. However, this has been the case on three different routers and only with my husband's computer (I am using my computer to send this message). Also, there was no internet challenge before Peppermint. I'm just wondering if I should try reinstalling Peppermint all over again. It would be a hassle, but maybe something went wrong during the installation.

I'm thinking it might be easier to just get one of these
http://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_detail/data/edimax/in/wireless_adapters_n150/ew-7811un/
which should work "out of the box" in Peppermint 5

Okay, my next round of trial and error to get internet working...  my my nephew gave me his old SMC toggle (SMCWUSBS-N3). I downloaded the driver and opened the Read Me file and can't understand it all. (I don't at the moment have access to the exact product you recommended).  I'm not actually sure if it works in Peppermint.

I am copying and pasting the Read Me file here:

If you want for rt2870 driver to auto-load at boot time:
A) choose ra0 for first RT2870 WLAN card, ra1 for second RT2870 WLAN card, etc.

B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,
edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
       alias ra0 rt2870sta

C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0
   DEVICE='ra0'
   ONBOOT='yes'

NOTE:
if you use dhcp, add this line too .
    BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

*D) To ease the Default Gateway setting,
    add the line
    GATEWAY=x.x.x.x
    in /etc/sysconfig/network

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
when a file opens that already contains some stuff, add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads

blacklist brcmsmac

SAVE the file .. and reboot

Now post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scanning

Try running:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -u
then REBOOT.

Now what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network

I apologize, my husband has given up on Peppermint now. He's ready to go back to Windows, so I am going to try to find some other last minute solution. I'm sure it is not Windows only that can use the aspire one's wireless driver. Thanks so much for your help, and sorry we couldn't bring this problem to a conclusion.

I don't know if this will help solve the mystery of kskarda's problems, but she and her husband may not be alone concerning diver issues that are affecting some computers running either Arch or Ubuntu-based distributions.  Might there be an issue about Xorg affecting divers?

Admittedly, I don't know a thing about Xorg, so feel free to take what I speculating upon here with a grain of salt!

Of course, you guys know me.  I tend to blame everything on that new Aura feature of Chrome and Chromium.  I did notice that her own personal computer has no problem with Elementary OS, and the default browser of Elementary is Midori and not Chromium.

So now I'm speculating her husband's computer's problem is either with Xorg or Aura, and maybe there's nothing anyone here can do about it at this time.  :(

Can't for the life of me see how Xorg would influence wireless ?

Xorg is concerned with graphics and input .. it has nothing to do with networking/wireless, in fact my VPS hasn't got Xorg installed (14.04 server edition, so no GUI ddesktop) yet networking/wireless work fine.

Oh, and what's with the video ? .. I wasted nearly 12 minutes of my life waiting for him to mention a connection, but he doesn't AT ALL .. the video is TOTALLY superfluous and takes MUCH longer than 1:45 to watch  :-\

Sorry, PCNetSpec.

Xorg was mentioned in the first minute plus as being the reason why Matthew Moore wasn't using Arch or Ubuntu -- nothing more.  I'll remove the link.

My apologies.  :-[

No worries perknh .. I was only pulling your leg about the 12 mins....

That said, what's your address so I can bill you for an hour (minimum time allotment) ;)

Okay, all, I think I have a partial answer for you all... after the fact. I don't understand the "why" behind the problem, but I can more accurately pinpoint where the problem was.

So when I first installed elementary OS onto my computer, I also installed it onto my husband's computer, and we couldn't get the graphics driver to work. I discovered this was a well recognized (and currently unsolvable) problem and thus switched to Peppermint for him. Peppermint seemed to have no problems while on the USB and for about the first thirty minutes of working before I had finished setting it up. It stopped working, after I checked the driver manager and followed the instructions to install the proprietary wireless driver kernel. (I realize now that this must have been the exact moment, because...)

The same thing happened when I installed Linux Mint 17 xfce. The good news? I did not wait any longer to try to "fix" it and reinstalled Mint again but simply ignored the proprietary driver. The result? Works great. Actually has the best and fastest internet now of all the computers in the house.

Sooooo... I am fairly confident the same solution would have worked with Peppermint as well. Something is wrong when loading the proprietary wireless driver in both OS (which makes sense, since they share a lot of overlap).

Anyhow, I thought I'd go back and let you know, because maybe it provides some useful information for others in the future. Again, thanks so much for the support you provided!
