Post by: iamesperambient on September 26, 2014, 02:57:58 am
apparenly with the newest version of ubuntu which peppermint 5 is based off and using chrome the newest version
and updating NSS version 3.16.2 netflix will work with out netflix desktop (which i think is a great option than nothing
but runs very slow on my comp) how do i update the NSS version 3.16.2 to see if this will work? has anyone tried it yet?

It has already been rolled out as a security update.

Run:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -s libnss3 | grep Version
if it outputs
Version: 2:3.17.1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
you already have it

if it outputs:
Version: 2:3.15.4-1ubuntu7
you don't .. so run a full system update.

i do have it but it still does the whole 'netflix is only for mac pc and chromebook' nonsense i even have html5 set in my preferences. i read their not
making it work fully until everyone has updated or something like that. Looking forward to beign able to use netflix is a more standard way.
I wish they would make support for firefox as im not the biggest chrome fan, but it will do for now.

Try a user agent switcher .. so your browser reports it's running on Windows/OS X

i get the error message on netflix you always get saying you need either windows, mac or chrome os to play netflix.
how does that switcher thing work? will netflix desktop always work, or once this happens that won't work anymore?

oh so the switcher is basically the same thing as wine it pretends its running on windows interesting.

chrome on windows tell sme i need a windows 8 app to work
and than the osx one tells me i need silverlight installed so ii assume this still does not
properly work.  netflix desktop seems to be the only option.

OK, looks like you need the "beta" or "dev" build of Google Chrome, the latest libnss3, libnss3-1d, and libnss3-nssdb (which you should already have if your system is up to date), and to use a user agent switcher:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/08/netflix-linux-html5-support-plugins

I'm guessing you have the Google Chrome "stable" release .. not the beta or dev release .. or haven't switched your user agent, or used the right user agent string.

I can't test this stuff as I don't have a netflix account .. but if set up correctly it should work.

i installed chrome beta and it basically causes my computer to just shut down. so i removed it. i guess its netflix desktop for life hopefully
netflix doesn't get rid of silverlight all together.

I very much doubt it is a problem with Netfilx.  From my experience, I would name Google Chrome "beta, dev" as the culprits.  I have never been able to get a current "Stable" version of Chrome/Chromium to work, let alone a "beta" or "dev" version.  They always do something ghastly  :'(.  At the moment I run Google Chrome Version 36.0.1985.143 because the current "stable" version 37 messes up all the SSBs I made with Ice.  Before that, it was a rendering issue.  The list goes on  >:(!

If you ever need to do a retrograde, here's a link to previous versions of Google Chrome : Google Chrome - Previous Versions (http://mirror.pcbeta.com/google/chrome/deb/pool/main/g/google-chrome-stable/).  When I see Google Chrome "Beta", alarm bells go off and I think Google Chrome "Experimental"  :-[.  It will work with Google Chrome/Chromium "stable"  The big questions are which version and when though  :-\?

thanks for the info. ya beta literally made my computer just turn off as if it hit shutdown.
i have chrome stable right now. netflix doesn't work with it i tried so netflix desktop i guess still for now.
when i make SSB's with ice i used chromium not chrome ( i prefer it) but when doing normal web surfing
and for most things i prefer firefox, its fast, clean supports open source and against the whole tampering
with your privacy thing which im big on. since i started using linux/firefox/duckduckgo i have had no bs ads
following me around on every site i go on like when i used mac >chrome> google. Nothing worse than being
on amazon looking at say a new watch than goign to last fm to find new music and seeing ads for the same watches
you just looked at.

would downgrading chrome help in anyway?
and how would i use that link to downgrade?

No, it will make no difference at all.  Or, I seriously doubt it.  Google have already stated it will only work with the present "beta" or "dev" version of Chrome.  If you ever need to retrograde, (for whatever reason  :-\).  Follow the instructions provided in the following link: How to Retrograde Google Chrome/Chromium Browsers (http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,494.0.html).   Obviously, substitute the version you need rather than using the version provided in the link.  I hope this helps  ;).

i tried beta and it made my computer crash so im assuming this WILL NOT work as soon as i load up beta and try to add an extension (the user agent switcher)
the computer shiuts off instantly.

Nice one  ;).  It's Murphy's Law that it requires a minimum of Google Chrome version 37 to work.  Yup, the one that messes up my system - Grrrrr  >:(!!

So what was it that worked ? .. the User Agent string ?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -s libnss3 | grep Version
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep google-chrome
?

Hi, when I run Google Chrome version 37, the SSBs I created won't recognize site favicons.  If I revert to version 36, everything works hunky-dory.   My backup browser is Qupzilla.  That has just been updated to version 1.8.0.  That also won't recognize site favicons.  The previous version was fine.  That's not a problem because there are no SSBs.  I just thought I would mention it as a reference.  Here are the outputs you asked for.
Code: [Select]
andy@AMILO-Li3710 ~ $ dpkg -s libnss3 | grep Version
Version: 2:3.17.1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
andy@AMILO-Li3710 ~ $ dpkg -l | grep google-chrome
hi  google-chrome-stable                                        36.0.1985.143-1                        amd64        The web browser from Google

Sorry AndyInMokum, those questions were for iamesperambient

I'm trying to figure out what he did differently this time that made it work .. because those instructions are the same as the ones I provided and linked to.  :-\

I was trying to figure out why you were interested in those outputs  :-\.  I'm also intrigued to know what he did differently too.  My issues are solely in the hands of Google and their definition of "Stable"  ;D.

what worked was setting the options in the ua switcher and that its not beta version of chrome its actually stable 37 the one that works well for me
beta crashed my system with in seconds.

User Agent Switcher settings were contained in the link I posted here:

;)

Any chance you can post the outputs I asked for please ?
(so future readers can see exactly which versions work .. TIA)

sorry guess i didn't see.

iamesper@justin-Latitude-D630 ~ $ dpkg -s libnss3 | grep Version
Version: 2:3.17.1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
iamesper@justin-Latitude-D630 ~ $

iamesper@justin-Latitude-D630 ~ $ dpkg -l | grep google-chrome
rc  google-chrome-beta                                          38.0.2125.77-1                          i386         The web browser from Google
ii  google-chrome-stable                                        37.0.2062.120-1                         i386         The web browser from Google
iamesper@justin-Latitude-D630 ~ $

basically all i did was download the user agent and change the options they listed and that was it to get it working.
works much cleaner and the video isn't choppy like netflix desktop. I also made a perm spoof so as soon as it loads up
netflix it changes the user agent.

also just curious why do we still have to spoof or pretend were not linux to use netflix on linux if its based off html5
which has no connection to microsoft?

Thanks for the output :)

The reason you have to spoof that you're running Windows is that Netflix (for whatever reason) have set their servers to actively NOT serve to a PC that identifies itself as Linux.

Originally they wanted to wait until the majority of distros have the version of nss that allows their anti-piracy stuff to work .. and maybe they've just set a date for the "turn on".

Yep!  According to what I've read, in the dev mailing lists...

The Canonical devs did everything Netflix devs requested, in both Chrome and Chromium.

Now, it's in Netflix' court.   :-\

I was just rereading the thread...

Quote from: padolph at nenflix.com
That's great news. If both 14.10 and 14.02 have a recent (> 3.16.2) version of NSS, I can make a case here to lift the User-Agent filtering which will make Netflix HTML5 play in Chrome turnkey with no hacks required. So please let me know when you get around to it.

And, most recently...

Quote from: padolph at nenflix.com
Looks good here. I confirmed that both 12.04 and 14.04 received the NSS update today and both play in Chrome M37 (stable) with just the UA hack. Thanks for the quick turn around! The ball is in our court now regarding the UA filter.

Evidently, that's what the Netflix devs are doing, right now -- making their case to the Netflix muckity-mucks.  ;)
