Title: When does the next version of Peppermint release?
Post by: kendall on March 12, 2014, 04:37:53 pm
At Peppermint, we don't adhere to a strict release schedule as many other distros do. Rather we adopt a policy of "it's ready when it's ready." Of course we don't try to delay the release any longer than is absolutely necessary, but sometimes it comes a little faster and sometimes it comes a little slower. Being that Peppermint is based on the April release of Ubuntu each year, we typically release during May or June.

Hi Chris, Its as the guys have said, Peppermint OS Four has been unsupported since April 2014.  Ubuntu have finally shut down all the servers.  I noticed that you have been running Peppermint OS Four 32bit.  Your computer is a 64bit machine.  Peppermint Five 64bit should easily install.  The big bonus is, it is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.  This effectively gives Peppermint Five, five years of support, (April 2019).   I can honestly say Peppermint Five is a huge improvement to Peppermint OS Four.  We both know how good it was too  8).  That says a lot about Peppermint Five.  Good luck!

As far as i understood this, Lubuntu 14.04 LTS will get 3-years support instead of the full 5-year support:

From Wikipedia.org:
Quote
14.04 LTS   Trusty Tahr   2014-04-17   April 2017   Long-term support release, supported for 3 years

I've read somewhere else that the 3-year support only applies for Lubuntu specific software and that Lubuntu will get (Ubuntu) security updates for 5 years... Not sure is this is true.

OK, the lowdown....

The Peppermint specific stuff will receive updates only until Peppermint 6 .. so 1 year

Lubuntu specific software (the LXDE bits) will receive updates for 3 years

All the other stuff, 5 years

Now think about it .. The peppermint specific stuff tends to be configuration, artwork, and a couple of apps that are unlikey to change much anyway (peppermint-control-center / ice) .. any bugs are usually well sorted by the time a year is up.

LXDE is dropping the gtk stuff anyway

99% of the OS is directly from the Ubuntu (14.04) repos

So .. 99% of Peppermint 5 will be fully supported for 5 years .. the other stuff is unlikely to need any updates during that extended period = Peppermint though not "officially" an LTS can be treated as one, and should be good for 5 years.
(that said, you can always move to the next version if you choose)

Hello!

I know I've not posted on the PMOS form (much).  But I really do like PMOS; it's very nice for my older computers.

Anyway, when the new release comes out; how does one upgrade?

Is it the Ubuntu method of a long update process that leaves your data where it is?  Or the LInux Mint method of starting from scratch (including a data back up utility, of course)?

Just wondering how an upgrade might be, typically.  I've got Peppermint 5 on two computers (a laptop and netbook), and will be installing it on a slightly-larger-than normal netbook.  They're all old workhorses that work just find with Linux.  And I figure PMOS is perfect for all of them, since I typically take them to libraries or coffee shops or the like to make use of free WiFi.

Thanks!

Peppermint historically release around May/June annually .. and the update method is like Mint (full reinstall).

Thanks for that.  Just wanted to know what was in store for me when Peppermint six comes out!

Are there instructions for that specific to Peppermint, or should I just look at the Linux Mint instructions?

I don't think that you need to worry about this already: it will be several years until Peppermint 6 is available ...  ::)

Just enough to time for me to break this installation so I can get a fresh one ;)

Hello DrCreamcake,

I tried the LXQt over at Manjaro about a month ago, and I didn't have much success with it.  In fact, it performed better for me a year ago than it did a month ago!  Now, really, I don't know why this was.  But, I wonder if development has slowed down concerning LXQt.  :-\

Even though I like to take a peek at these things every now and then, I had really bad luck with it over at Manjaro.  I had lots of problems updating it.

P.S.

This may only be me, but a year ago, when LXQt was working better at Manjaro, I did not find LXQt as easy to use as Peppermint.

I tried LXQT before. It was okay and not too heavy on my poor little machine. Using Kwin, I think it weighed in about as much on system resources as XFCE. I believe it was the panel that annoyed me for some reason, though.

Yes, it was a nuisance setting up that panel.  It wasn't very user-friendly.  That's how I remember the experience.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
the output from that command will tell you which kernel you're currently using.

if it mentions i386 - you're running the 32bit kernel

if it mentions amd64 - you're running the 64bit kernel

I guess that's what you mean ?

Thanks PCNetSpec.  That tells me 3.16.0-41-generic, which is what I was after.  Other systems on my laptop show the kernel in use in the grub graphical loader entries, but not Peppermint.

I do understand it's somewhat heinous to revive a long-dead bugger, but I would have to duplicate the thread otherwise :(.

I read that Peppermint OS operates on a Blizzard-esque basis of 'it's done when it's done'. However, as Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is almost out and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be fully supported only until 2017 as I reckon, is there any work being done on Peppermint OS Seven (7)?

I am honestly just curious, because Peppermint OS Six (6) is working fantastically on my desktop, though some of the software (including the kernel) is getting quite stale :).

Yes work is most definitely underway on Peppermint 7

BTW, 14.04 is supported for 5 years so 2019

That doesn't sound so bad then :). I'll keep using it on my desktop to see how well it competes with Manjaro and Arch Linux.

Instead of new edition yearly, why does not have 5 years LST?I use Peppermint eight, and I'm satisfied...or enable upgrade such as Ubuntu or Mint   :)

PeppermintOS 8 is LTS and will be supported until well into 2021 (Ubuntu 16.04).   Upgrading to the newest release is not required and, in fact, many users stay with earlier versions until their EOL.  Annual releases are offered that reflect what the team considers enhancements and improvements.

Upgrading is something we are looking at.  Just not sure which version it will be implemented from.

We are all here because Peppermint simply Rocks  :D

Stick with LTS or re-install each year - the choice is yours.

I'm not even sure we **should** be looking at this .. we already only base on LTS's (so every version is good for 5 years, or whenever the user CHOOSES to reinstall a new version), do-dist-upgrades have a horrible habit of borking peoples system when they haven't bothered to backup and just "trusted" something that because of the sheer amount of variables is inherently risky at the best of times.

If they're forced to do a full install, they're MUCH more likely to backup their important stuff first.

Personally I've never trusted do-dist-upgrades on PC's with a GUI .. they're stable "enough" on the GUI-less server editions .. but evn there they go wrong occasionally.

Think about this .. would you trust a "do-dist-upgrade" on say a system with full disk encryption .. where if it goes wtrong, they're likely to have lost everything. ;)

And just as importantly, would you be willing to offer support in these circumstances ?

I'd rather people moan that we don't have an easy upgrade path, than moan that we lost all their stuff ;)

Rolling release is something else I have no interest in, for pretty much the same reason .. eventually they'll tie themselves in knots (usually by or before the one to two year mark anyway .. but near certainly before an LTS runs out) and you'll risk having lost everything again (unexpectedly).

I'm a firm believer that OS's **need** a fresh 'from scratch' reinstall every now and again .. specially where there's a GUI, and users that have made loads of changes, undone half of them, then added other changes on top, ad infinitum.
(a server that rarely gets modified beyond updates, and doesn't have X11 and GUI apps to worry about is a different matter .. but then a server admin is liable to backup before making ANY changes anyway)

Since I've installed a data partition, upgrades are a breeze, fresh install, load up the software and a few minutes to make symlinks and I'm done. Makes it real easy to check out different distros on different partitions too, I link them all up to my data partition.

I'm beginning to think it may be better to talk more about having a:-

/STORAGE

partition than a:-

/DATA

partition .. calling it /STORAGE seems more accurate to me, and less likely to cause confusion about its purpose.

Just a thought :)
