Can't make links (SOLVED)
« on: July 27, 2020, 10:32:20 am »
In Peppermint 9 I have a couple of USB drives formatted in exFAT. Making links of folders or files is not possible. Error message: Function not implemented. What could be the solution? Otherwise, no problems working with those files and folders.

Hi josefmw, what kind of links are you trying to make? The usb's will mount and you can access the files?
What was I thinking?

Thank you for reacting.  Yes I can mount all drives. The problem doesn't exist on the one drive I formatted in NTFS, it only exists in those I formatted in exFAT. So in opening the drives, I can access all folders files and files, but, for instance in media/elias/F - clicking right on an folder or file, in the new window popping up, clicking write on the folder or 'Make link' doesn't work. I get the error message: *Error while creating link to 00Peppermint.
There was an error creating the symlink in media/elias/
Function not implemented."

Check out this link from How-to-Geek, maybe there's an answer in there for you.

Thank you. for thinking with and for me! I did check out the link and put in that command: sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils, although, the problem wasn't mounting the drives, they did mount, but making a link of the folders and files for the desktop.  And this is still not possible. I hope, Peppermint 10 and 11 will have solved that problem.

exFAT can't do symlinks, no matter which Peppermint you've got. Why did you format them as exFAT?

I formatted in exFAT because I wanted to be able to read and write in Peppermint and Windows 10. That didn't work in NTFS. I found recommendations on Internet that exFAT would allow this.

Thank you for that information. NTFS formatted drives make links in Peppermint, no problem. As far as the exFat drives are concerned, I will stick to them and accept simply to work with them, without the links of files and folders on the screen.
