New P10 install running very slowly. RESOLVED
« on: June 22, 2020, 03:29:14 am »
Hi, everyone,

I've just installed P10 on a friends old laptop which was running P8 OK but although the install went well the laptop takes a what seems an age to log in  - 1min 45secs from switch on to login screen & 28 secs from entering password to "home" page.

Also when menu button is pressed it only works intermittently sometimes needing several clicks of the mouse before it brings up the menu.

Are those times common as they are a lot slower than my own laptop using P8 and a Desktop running P10?
It is a very old laptop but did run P8 OK before.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Hi Fitzroy,

As usual, we need more info about the friend's computer. Please have your friend open a terminal and enter this command:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Then copy the output and post it in your next message (or have your friend register with the forum so that we can directly communicate).

As far as slow boot times go, search our forum using the Search function (at the top of the page) and the search terms "slow boot time" or similar to find some possible solutions to that issue. As you will discover there are numerous possible areas to investigate and the more information you can provide about the computer and some of the installation settings the better we can assist you/your friend.  ;)

Regards,

Hi Fitzroy,

So this machine only has about 400 GB of RAM:o Have you performed a search and tried out any of the suggested solutions for speeding up the boot time? I think that if the computer only has about 400 GB of RAM that you cannot expect much performance with Peppermint 10 and should reinstall Peppermint 8;)

OOps -- LOL  :D :-[

Of course, I mean 400 MB. That is really very little. Just opening a web browser with a couple of tabs puts you very near or even above that limit! If buying and installing additional RAM is not an option, then (as suggested) go for Peppermint 8.

Hi, Slim.Fatz

400gb!! If only!!

I first put P5 on this a few years ago and it was fine then P8 and it wasn't too bad clearly P10 is a step too far. At least i know now what the problem is and if I re-install P8 it will keep it going for a bit longer.

Grateful for the replies and interest only snag is the laptop won't recognise a bootable USB so I'm having to use a CD which takes forever.  :(

Thanks again.

Kind regards.

According to the specs for that model laptop on google, it can run a maximum of 1 gig ram, looks like they may share some with the video card though...    :-)

Hi, folks,

Have re-installed P8 and it's running as before not superfast but OK.

I have a very limited knowledge of computers but it's great to know that there are so many helpful folks who are prepared to guide the less able!!

Thanks again.

Hi Fitzroy,

Very happy to hear that you have found a solution!  :) It might be worth following up on the suggestion from rjm65 to expand the RAM to 1 GB (if it is not too expensive). The difference would definitely be noticeable and would make the experience of surfing the web more enjoyable for your friend.

Also: thank you for marking the topic RESOLVED8)

Hi, Slim,

I've left her thinking about what to do next!!

Upgrading the memory is a possibility i suppose but as I understand it the laptop is 32bit so wouldn't that mean it has a limited life span as I read somewhere that Ubuntu are dropping support for 32 bit machines/software and Peppermint wouldn't then have a 32bit version?

I may have that wrong of course!!

Hi Fitzroy,

Unfortunately, yes, it does look as though 32-bit support will be (eventually) no longer available from Ubuntu:(

Hi, Slim

Thanks for the confirmation. i have suggested she runs what she has until P8 isn't supported and then takes stock.

Thank you and the other kind folks on here for all your help and advice.

Best wishes.
