I downloaded latest Ver 10 (Jun20) in order to install to a usb drive...........used 'USB Stick Formatter' found under 'System'....set a very usual partition set up.../, /home//swap(small). then proceded to do the install. Ended up with ZFS wiping my partition choices and the USB will not boot! Being ZFS I can't add a boot parameter to ZFS .

I have been out of touch, must admit, and surprised at the ZFS but essentially I need the USB to boot......any suggestions?

Hi plumtreed,

ZFS will not be used for an installation unless you explicitly select it. And that is not advisable at this point in time, because ZFS is (for Ubuntu-based distros) still somewhat experimental. Only those with good knowledge of ZFS should attempt to use it. To my knowledge, ZFS is not advisable for use on a thumb drive. It is, according to what I have last seen, best for use on large storage capacity systems that are used for web servers or enterprise applications.

My only advice is that you need to start over from the beginning and wipe (reformat) the USB stick. Then reinstall Peppermint, this time being careful to select e.g. ext4 rather than ZFS;)

Know what you mean but ZFS still results.........checking back via "install type" page it shows my selection of ext4 on the USB but Gparted shows 1 ZFS partition. I followed your suggestion and formatted the USB prior to running the install again.

I seems as if ZFS is somehow locked into the USB ????????? I might just find another drive before trying again.

BTW Peppermint is Ubuntu based...just sayin

Wow! That is something I have not found in my readings -- although I must say that I don't read much about ZFS because it is not for me.

Right you are, plumtreed -- there was never any doubt about that! 8)

From my poking around the interwebs, it seems you're going to either have to toss that USB or use something pretty aggressive to wipe & reformat it... the mention of DD comes up frequently...

and yes... ZFS IS NOT intended for usb nor individual computers... though there are mentions of it on our forums as far back as 2016...

......thanks for the help, much appreciated, just to set the record straight I have no interest in using ZFS in this case.....It just arrived.

Any idea how much space, minimum, is needed to install peppermint.

I have installed it previously in as little as a 7gb partition... wouldn't recommend it though.

Thanks Spence.....just for testing not full time install!

Getting back to ZFS, there doesn't seem to be a ZFS selection during partitioning :-\

Hi plumtreed, I'm a little confused, but that's normal, are you having trouble burning the iso file to the usb stick or installing from the the usb stick with the iso onto another usb stick?
What was I thinking?

I was using an ISO on a USB, installing to another USB.

I think the problem is sorted.....I did a format on the receiving disk....via terminal and that seemed to sort the problem. I had relied on ticking the format box during the install. I will also say that I have been playing with ZFS but can't believe there would be a connection.
