SSH with full root access
« on: September 20, 2014, 02:08:03 pm »
Guys, how do I go about setting up SSH with full root access so I can access my box from another location?

Another location meaning another PC on the same local network .. or across the internet ?

What are you intending on doing?

If you're going to transfer files across machines, my I suggest FTP?!?!?

It will be for working on the localhost on this machine, I guess SFTP would work, how would I set that up?

First of all, be aware that I've never met an expert, on the web, that agrees with me on this.  They think it's overkill, or just plain stupidity.

What I do is install an FTP server on one machine, and an FTP client on the other.  Personally, I put the FTP server on the winders machine, and the FTP client on the Linux machine, but you can do it either way.

In advance, why do I use FTP?  It's an ancient protocol, but it just works.

I did a lot of experimentation, transferring large tarballs across my LAN to various machines, using various protocols, and FTP worked 100% of the time.

Every other protocol I tested resulted in failed checksums on the transferred files, almost every time.

I'll stop now...   ;)

in either case you're not going to get external (internet) access without a static WAN IP or a of dynamic DNS service.

For local network ssh
on the Peppermint box install openssh-server (and if you want openssh-sftp-server)

on the tablet you'll need an ssh-client .. then run something like
ssh derainwolf@192.18.1.10
to connect

Word of warning .. it is considered VERY unsafe to expose ssh (particularly on its default port) to the internet unless through a certificate authenticated VPN tunnel
(I'd personally consider exposing FTP extremely unsafe too .. unless through a cert authenticated VPN tunnel)

But seriously, for most purposes I'd simply go with TeamViewer .. which will allow you access across the web without needing a static WAN IP, VPN tunnel, or Dynamic DNS setup.

True!  Oddly, I know it's counter-intuitive, but that's why I suggested using winders for the server.

I think we're better off staying in_house on this, but if the user felt adventuresome, I was going to suggest using Cerberus FTP Server

I've always had good luck with it, in the past, and it's secure -- HIPAA compliant, actually.

Okay, out with the winders stuff...   :D
