Peppermint OS 4 in VirtualBox doesn't boot?
« on: March 27, 2014, 10:55:34 pm »
Hi, I am really interested in using peppermint in a virtual machine before I do an install on my home computer, but it doesn't seem to want to boot with the 32 bit or 64 bit versions of the downloadable ISO from peppermint OS. I am really excited to use as it has received really good reviews on ram and memory etc. but I can't seem to figure out how to do an install in the virtualbox vm, also I see the starting of an error message when I attempt to boot, something with "endtext" in it I believe, can't say for sure it comes and goes so quickly. Please, if anyone can help any and all will be greatly appreciated.  ;)

Will the ISO image boot in Vbox if you select "Try Peppermint" instead of "Install Peppermint" ?

If so, try installing it from the "Install Peppermint" Icon you'll find on the desktop.

Thanks for the prompt reply!! I have tried both of these options and neither seem to be working as intended  :'(. I have attempted to use a couple of different vm i believe that i attempted bochs on my pc and imbo emulator apk on my galaxy tab 3. But none of these options seem to work. I don't really understand why, I have tried 32bit and 64 bit, install peppermint os and try peppermint os live, and i have tried on a couple of different machines. I am a noob when i comes to linux, so I may be the problem here, lol, but I have watched several tutorials and followed the to the tea and I still can't seem to get this going.

Thanks,

Are you sure you can run 64bit VM's ?

If you're sure, there's a pre-built Peppermint 4 64bit VDI image here:
http://virtualboximages.com/Peppermint+4+amd64+VirtualBox+VDI+Virtual+Computer

or direct download link:
http://vdi-downloads.dynalias.net/VMs/PeppermintOS/4/VirtualBox_-_Peppermint-4-20130611-amd64_VDI-%5bVirtualBoxImages.com%5d.rar

If this is just for a test drive, have you considered a LiveUSB with persistence ?

Yea, I have considered a bootable USB, and successfully created one, but turns out my computer doesn't boot from USB, just cd, dvd, and floppy, but I don't have availability of any of these other bootable devices other than a usb at the moment. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Yes, I did get Peppermint OS 3 to boot before you even recommended it, I would like to use peppermint os 4 though just because it is newer and I would imagine that it would have more people using therefore have a little more support. But if need be I will use the peppermint os 3 in the vm just to get a look and feel of this os. Are they similar in lay out and what not? If not, I will still try to get Peppermint OS 4 to boot.

I see you can boot from floppy have you considered making a floppy diskette with plop boot manager image on it?
I have one of these made up and it is a lifesaver for me, you can boot the plop manager off the diskette, and you will have options to then boot off your USB stick or cdrom or hard drive using plop manager...  :)

There are, of course, differences in P3 and P4, a lot of which are subtle and / or behind the scenes.  One major difference is the use of Xfwm4 in the place of Openbox.  Be that as it may, P3 still gets excellent support as many forum members (including myself) still use it.  So rest at ease if support is your major concern in using P3.

BTW.....Welcome to the Forum  ;D

If the intention is now to create a LiveUSB, then use PLoP on a floppy disk to boot it (because your BIOS doesn't support USB booting) there's a good tutorial here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16822/boot-from-a-usb-drive-even-if-your-bios-wont-let-you/

hr]

Another method if the USB stick is recognised by the BIOS as an HDD might be to use a SuperGrub2 floppy disk:
