Compaq Presario CQ60 AR242X AR542X wireless
« on: September 11, 2014, 04:23:41 pm »
I installed Peppermint 5 on a old Compaq Presario CQ60 with a AR242X AR542X wireless network adapter.

For some reason the WiFI networks do not show up in the panel. It shows a message "WiFi is disabled by hardware switch".

The hardware switch on the laptop indicates Wi-Fi is switched on (I can't get it to switch off by the way ....)

I read some advice here and there, but nothing worked so far. Anybody any suggestions?

The output from
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
is:

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scanning

[EDIT]

Also is there a BIOS option to have wireless enabled at bootup ?

And what happens if you shut down your laptop .. remove the power lead .. remove the battery .. press the power button (to discharge any remaining power) .. then add back in the battery and power lead and boot up.
does it still say wireless is disabled at the power switch ?

if so, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsusb
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net

The output for
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scanning
is:
Code: [Select]
wlan0     No scan results

lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth1      Interface doesn't support scanning.

In the BIOS I could find any option to enable wireless at bootup. There is, though, an option to boot from a network. That option has an exclamation mark in front of it, indicating it is disabled. I tried to enable it, but I couldn't. But that doesn't have to do anything with it, I guess.

Shutting down the laptop, removing the battery, pressing the power button didn't change anything. It seemed wireless was switched off during boot, but the indicator lamp turned blue (indicating it is on) as soon as Peppermint started up.

There was a large update when I started up the laptop. It did change something in the sense that the option "Enable WiFi" in the system tray is now on (it said at first it was disabled by a hardware switch.)

Are you sure there isn't a hardware problem .. did the wireless work in the previous OS ?

No, I am not sure there isn't a hardware problem. I do not know whether or not the wireless worked with the previous OS.

I received the laptop from a friend with a crashed hard drive. After some attempts to recover the hard drive I gave up, replaced it with another one and installed Peppermint.

I read about this WiFi network card having troubles in Ubuntu. Here, here and here. Nothing worked for this laptop, so there might a hardware problem. But ... because I always doubt myself I sought the advice of an expert ,,, and I found it  :)

The owner of the laptop assured me WiFi worked, but I doubt it ....  :-X I might as well advice him to buy a USB WiFi adapter that works with Linux.

With kind regards,

We can look through the logs for errors if you wish ?, but that exclamation mark in the BIOS suggests there may be a hardware issue.

Can you run:
Code: [Select]
tar czvf ~/logs.tar.gz /var/log/dmesg /var/log/boot.log /var/log/kern.log /var/log/syslog
you should then have a file in your home folder called "logs.tar.gz" .. can you host that file online somewhere and provide me with a link to it.

Just as an experiment .. let's try blacklisting hp_wmi and seeing if that makes a difference.

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads:-

blacklist hp_wmi

SAVE the file

REBOOT   <--IMPORTANT

Test wireless .. and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
rfkill list all
and
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scanning
and
lsmod | grep wmi

Is there a hardware switch for bluetooth ? .. it seems to be loading the drivers for bluetooth, but that's not showing up in rfkilll list  :-\

I blacklisted blacklist hp_wmi. Saved the file and rebooted the laptop.

There is a difference:
  • if I right click the network symbol in the LXDE panel the "Enable WiFi" option is greyed out. (Like it was before the update from yesterday.)
  • If I left click the network symbol in the LXDE panel the WiFi Networks option is greyed out, and there is a message under it telling me that WiFi is disabled by  hardware switch. (Also like it was before the update from yesterday.)
  • The hardware switch for WiFi signals WiFi is switched on. (As it does all the time.)

The output from
Code: [Select]
rfkill list all
is:
Code: [Select]
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
:o

The output from
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scanning
is:
Code: [Select]
wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth1      Interface doesn't support scanning.

The output from
Code: [Select]
