Need tutorial for setting up VNC server on peppermint 5
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:25:34 pm »
I've just installed peppermint 5 and am getting various things set up.

I installed Remmina and can do client connections to other VNC servers, but I am wondering about how to set up VNC server on peppermint so i can remote desktop to it.
Anybody know an appropriate tutorial to use to set this up?
Google turns up stuff for Mint using tightvnc and vncserver - i guess i need guidance on what would be best for peppermint. ??

TIA,
Phillip

Is this for access across a local network, across the interweb via a VPN tunnel, or across the interweb not via a VPN tunnel ?

If it's for access across the web, NOT via a VPN tunnel, have you considered Teamviewer ?

If it's across the web via a VPN tunnel, or only local network, this could fairly easily be modified to work with Peppermint 5 (only the script autostart part would need modifying):
http://www.libregeek.org/2014/04/29/getting-remote-access-work-ubuntu-14-04-vino/
(I haven't tested this though)

Or you might want to look into NoMachines (what used to be called NX)
https://www.nomachine.com/
and the docs/tutorials
https://www.nomachine.com/support
again it's beean a while since I used this, but it beat VNC hands down

Now I Just use Teamviewer as it gives me easy access to customers Linux/Windows/OSX boxes .. there's nothing stopping you autostarting it at bootup with a fixed password, then you could remote control the Peppermint box from any Linux/Windows/OS X box (and even mobile devices)
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
and
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/linux.aspx
Not only does it allow remote control, but it allows file transfer and chat.....

i'm wanting to just be able to view other Linux boxes on local networks (both wired and wireless). thanks, this should get me going.

(i'll mark it SOLVED, once I've had a chance to try out the various solutions.)
