DVD plays fine....but can't find CDrom content SOLVED
« on: May 27, 2020, 01:49:58 pm »
I've got a DVD which has bonus content if used on a PC.   The content is mp3 files

When I click on the option for bonus content in VLC it says insert disk into your PC.   Handbrake doesn't see the mp3 files either. Neither does file manager. The DVD is new so I'm sure the files are on there

Googled it with no joy, other than finding that this is a problem with windows 10

This is driving me mad (there's six concerts on there, and I was at one of them!) and I would greatly appreciate any ideas !!!

Many thanks

Rick

I no longer have access to a machine which has a working CD or DVD player. Reminder: VLC is hasn't been the default multimedia player since PMVIII / Peppermint 8 ...

Swapped VLC for Xplayer (we've had reports that VLC has been getting a little 'flaky' for some users over their last few releases).

That notation aside, do any other PeppermintOS users know how to help @rickc?

No, fairly sure they aren't. I tried sudo apt-get install libdvdread4

I got this

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libdvdread4 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libdvdread4' has no installation candidate

I use VLC as it has always coped with anything I've thrown at it before.

have figured out I have libdvdnav4 and libdvdread7 installed.

Incidentally my hard drive also has ubuntu 20 and Windows 10.  Same issue with the other two

I'm using a USB dvd player as my laptop doesn't have one

hmm have you installed vlc from the software centers or via terminal? reason i ask is the snaps and flatpaks are containerized and may not be picking up the systemwide codecs. if you have a snap or flatpak vlc, id suggest purging it and install from synaptic instead.
i had a similar issue with gimp where it wouldnt pick up my plugins and using the repo version of gimp fixed it.
For wallpapers ive made you can download them here

Chances are it was some kind of software that was supposed to run on older versions of Windows to give you the bonus content. What is the DVD?

It's disc 6 of this "earbook" - https://www.statusquo.co.uk/reunion/ - extra content is 9 gigs in mp3 format. The first 6 sections work fine, the 7th - pc content, cannot be found

My VLC was snap store.  I've uninstalled and done it the old way, but no joy

Although this is a recent release DVD, it's years since I've seen anything with PC only content.

Sounds like this is my fault for abandoning windows xp :)

This thread was all I could find online, so at least it's not just me with it!

So if modern windows doesn't support DVD rom content, can linux?

Hello rickc,

How old is you dvd player.  I seem to go thru one every few years.  They are so cheap and unreliable, in my opinion.  I have issues with my asus dvd player but not with cd's on my desktop peppermint.  Funny how my laptop peppermint reads dvd and cd's fine.

It's brand new - but it is a cheap USB DVD RW.

It reads DVD's and CD's fine, but not rom content on them

Solved, all because I was an idiot !

The items are easily viewable. What threw me is that the nine folders were not labelled !

It's only when I copied and paste the file did the file become named properly.  Tried it again in windows which works the same.

Thx all for the suggestions
