What's wrong with LXQT?
« on: May 18, 2020, 10:38:15 am »
PCNEtSpec wanted to base the next release of Peppermint on Xubuntu, as Lubuntu 20.04 switches to LXQT.

Why is that? I have not used LXQT yet, but it seems to be a good idea in theory. The reviews are not that bad either, for example: https://www.hamishmb.com/blog/lxqt-review/

Hi Fritz74,

I will not give you the reply here as it is in the private meta area of the forum. But you, as a Trusted User, have access to that. So do a Search using LXQT XFCE as your search terms and PCNetSpec as the author. The first result that I get (from 2019-09-21) will perhaps answer some of your questions. If not, ask further in the meta section of the forum.  ;)

Thank you very much, Slim. Fatz!

(Just if anyone else is wondering: It seems that Peppermint uses only some essential components from LXDE, namely LXSession and LXAppearance, and that LXQT is not quite as slim as LXDE.)

The ever increasing size of LXQT ISOs were one aspect. After reviewing a few of PCNetSpec's threads, I am reminded that pepOS is not based on any singular distro.  Rather he had long been carving a  "pick  & choose" curation of what he considered "best of linux" components... in notes going back several years it's clear LXQt made applying his PeppermintOS preferred theming difficult, in his estimation.

having played with lubuntu 20.04, i too found that theming it is kinda hard. even with compton enabled and opacity set on windows i still cant get it to show transparent windows, only the borders. also applyiing dark themes doesnt appear to work either.  im thinking kwin might solve that but havent tested it out. outside of that lxqt has been quite decent
For wallpapers ive made you can download them here

I've been using LXQT since Lubuntu 19.10 and as much as I enjoy it for its minimalist simplicity there are a lot of things I simply don't like.
  • No window snapping
  • Inconsistent panel labels
  • difficult to theme, particularly the notification area
It kinda reminds me of how Gnome shell over simplified everything in the early versions to avoid "supporting" them only to bring it later versions.  ::)
