Canon printer issues(SOLVED!)
« on: May 16, 2020, 12:54:54 pm »
I have a Canon MX490.  Works just fine wireless with my Windows 10 machines.  It appears I was able to connect to it with my laptop running Peppermint but it doesnt seem to want to function.  I have done the "print test page" option several times but it doesn't do anything   Is this possibly a driver issue?  Maybe some Canon printers don't work with Linux? :(

Hi kalorenz03,

I would say it is almost surely a driver issue. Have you installed the packages hplip and hplip-gui (can be done using the synaptic package installer program in your Peppermint installation)? If not, please do so as they include many things that are not just HP-related.  ;)

thanks Slim.Fatz,

I tried that.  It looked like some of that was already installed actually.  Didnt seem to work.  Tried searching for drivers but they cannot be found.  I'm assuming I wont be able to print on this machine running Peppermint on my current printer.  Thankfully I have two other machines that can print to it though.  I was just trying to see what I could do.

Keep in mind all printers naturally work with Win8/Win10 and all prior WinVersions with infinite backwards compatibility, in order to maintain "good relationships" with Microsoft while defending their licensing agreements.

Meanwhile, some printer companies make sales based decisions about providing "alternative software driver compatibility," based on sales of each printer series. So it's not just a problem for PeppermintOS users, but ALL LINUX users. That said, Canon is actually one of the better companies in regards to linux support and you may well find a driver on their site. Look for one referencing debian or ubuntu for your particular printer series.

I found it strange that while trying to install the printer initially that it searched for drivers and came up with nothing.  I guess I would have thought it would have located them.  Very good insight and nice find indeed.  Understood its not isolated to just Peppermint OS.    Still no luck getting it to print.  Ive tried multiple test pages and it looks like it sets up the print job but, no physical product is dispensed....   :'(
I appreciate everyone's response and help.

sadly, that's not unusual, few printer manufacturers even bother to  investigate where to upload their drivers, so no repository will have them...

Sometimes... it's just best to do an ALT+ prtscr R E I S U O ...  and walk away for a few hours... days or... however long a vacation you wanna enjoy...

then see if drivers work after your system updates.

After that, if your printer is shared by a Win10 network workgroup... well, ummm

Wow that was overly complicated...at least for me but it worked after several tries of clicking the correct options.   This part of that link was the "Golden Ticket" for me!  Thank you so much Spence!

Anyway, problem solved using this procedure:
Printers -> Add printer -> Network printer -> choose my Canon MG6300-series -> Select driverless option -> Next

At this point don't do anything else, just leave the GUI open where it is!!

Launch http://localhost:631/admin enter username and password
Choose add printer and stay with the highlighted settings -> add the printer, which is successfully added -> Close the cups webUI and the Printers GUI and that's it!
