Software manager vs software (SOLVED)
« on: May 16, 2020, 07:52:06 am »
Good day.  New Peppermint user here.  What is the difference between the Software Manager and Software program that shows up in the system category in the menu by default?  My assumption is that Software Manager is a Peppermint specific thing and the other is outside of that.  They seem to have a fair share of similarities and differences.  Your input is appreciated.

Welcome, kalorenz03,

The main difference is the Software Manager is mostly .deb packages and is the Linux Mint softwar center.  Software is the Ubuntu software center and sports mostly snap packages.

Anyone feel free to correct me.

Thank you sir. I think I see what you mean.  I tested Ubuntu not too long ago before installing Peppermint and the "software" package does look very similar to what I remembered seeing while testing Ubuntu.  Good to see there's multiple options, I suppose.  I'll have to dive into both packages and see what works better for me.  I suspect it will be a little of both.

Silly question, are both of these packages the same as what they call "the repository?"

I can concur with steveveryown assessment  of both.   ;)

You also have a third option via the Synaptic Package Manager, a Linux stalwart.

The Repository... is what Synaptic Package Manager accesses to add/install /remove software. Its a GTK-based graphical user interface for the APT package manager used by the Debian Linux distribution and its derivatives...
