Graphical interface doesn't start (SOLVED)
« on: September 07, 2014, 05:06:17 pm »
Hi Peppermint helpers,
I'm ready now to install Peppermint 5 from a cd. It starts nicely with the Peppermint icon and "starting up". But when it has progressed to start the desktop it fails. There is a black and white striped screen (sorry, I don't know how to upload a photo) and I can't do anything with it. The former version did not have this problem. My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce 7200. Do I have to type any special boot parameters at the beginning?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Greetings,
Susanne

Boot to the Peppermint 5 LiveCD/LiveUSB .. when you get to the screen where it offers you "Try Peppermint" and "Install Peppermint" ..  hit the "Tab" key

You'll then see some white writing at the bottom of screen that ends with

quiet splash --

Use the backspace key to remove quiet splash --

and replace it with nomodeset

then hit enter to continue booting.

Did that make any difference ?

Hi PSNetSpec,
thank you for your help. With >nomodest< it starts the desktop. Can I install it now the normal way and will it load the graphics drivers automatically?
Greetings,
Susanne

You can install Peppermint now, but after installing you *may* need to manually set nomodeset again at bootup .. then install the nvidia drivers through "Additional Drivers".

Once installed, and if neccessary .. here's how to manually boot with nomodeset (it's different from te way you did it on the LiveCD)...

The following instructions are for a single boot ONLY .. so you'll have to do this EVERY time you boot .. but if it works, we can either install the proprietary drivers, or add nomodeset permanently to the kernel boot line.

Turn ON your laptop, and as soon as your BIOS POST screen disappears, press the SHIFT key and hold it, until you are presented with the GRUB menu .. SIMILAR to this:
(you won't have long to hit the shift key, and the timing can be a little awkward, so it may even be easier to hit AND HOLD the Shift key DURING the BIOS POST .. ie. immediately after turning on your PC)

Select the 'default' kernel (usually the top one), and rather than pressing enter, press E to edit.

You will be presented with a screen SIMILAR to this:

Press DOWN ARROW until you get to the line that starts with:

Quote
linux /boot

and press the END key to position the cursor at the end of the that line... it *usually* ends with “quiet splash”.

Now you can enter additional kernel boot options... so add nomodeset as in the above screenshot .. so it now reads:

Quote
quiet splash nomodeset
(doesn't matter if it moves down a line, as long as there is a space between splash and nomdeset)

Now hit Ctrl+X to boot.
