I've just had this exact problem occur. All computers on our network are operating fine, no connectivity problems. My laptop was working fine on wireless or ethernet a day or two ago. Now I am getting an ip address on each of these but I'm unable to connect to the internet. I do get a good ping from 8.8.8.8. but cannot make a connection with a browser. I've tried with and without a VPN connected and with and without the firewall active but no differences.

Here is the output requested from the original post...Thanks, Jay!!!

Right-click the network manager icon in the system tray and Edit connections. Double-click on the connection you're using.

Go to the IPV4 settings tab. Make sure you've got DNS servers specified if you're on Automatic (DHCP) addresses only, or additional DNS servers if you're on Automatic (DHCP). I'd recommend the former.

These are DNS server IPs for OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

Click on Save.

You'll need to disconnect and reconnect the connection (you can remove the tick from Enable networking in the right-click menu and then re-enable it again). Hopefully you can now connect to websites.

murraymint,
Unfortunately no change, even after rebooting.  The changes are saved under IPv4 Settings>DNS servers, using Automatic (DHCP) addresses only.

So I solved this with nuclear option A, restore from a week ago with Timeshift.  The only thing I remember doing, other than email and browsing during that time frame, was loading and testing Virtualbox. I first removed the program but this did not help. I then remembered creating a restore point 9 days ago. That process went smoothly and now everything seems ok.

I'll run those commands again to see if there are any noticeable changes.

Thanks so much for helping...

Jay

PS: I'm not the original poster so I'm unsure if this thread should be marked solved or not. I don't now if the original poster is still looking for an answer.

When I was researching your problem I came across a link to something about Virtualbox breaking DNS on Ubuntu. This is very possibly the cause. Anyway, glad you're back online and you're very welcome for any help :)

That seems to have been my issue. Now that it's all back, DNS has returned to 192.168.1.1 and it all works.

Thanks so much,
Jay

Are we trying to fix someboll, the OP, or Jay S's problem?
What was I thinking?

The OP never returned with any info so somebody else came along with a similar problem.

I've just had this exact problem occur.

Hello & Welcome to the forum @Jay S. We are glad you found a resolution. In future we ask that you create your own OP (original post) with a link back to the common problem you are having by using the forum message tools like so:

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,9503.msg95303.html#msg95303

This allows you AND the original poster both to find a way to competion, leaving the way clear to mark it so individually. Be that as it may, when you are satisfied, please remember to kindly edit the subject line of your original post in this, or any of your threads, to append (SOLVED), (RESOLVED) or (ABANDONED) at the end. Whichever suits the status of your OP (original post)

Doing so helps in two ways: it helps future forum users know whether or not a solution to similar issues have been found, and relieves our small team of forum moderators of the need to read thru threads which have previously found completion.

 ;)
