Advent 7204
« on: March 22, 2020, 01:59:37 pm »
It's a very old and underpowered laptop but everything installed without difficulty. First question: how do I get the output from inxi -Fz into a post?. Presumably it's just a matter of sending its output to a file but I haven't found out how to yet.  I've used plenty of CLIs in previous lives but for the last 13 years it's been Windows only so I'm a little rusty.

Hello Bear...

CTRL > ALT > T... to open a terminal... type in inxi -Fz to get the first thing we need from you. Highlight the entire terminal output then use the # sign above the Angry egg emoji and paste. You'll get something that looks like so:

Thanks gents. The trouble I was having, believe it or not, was copying the terminal output to the clipboard. I'm used to Windows where Control-C copies. Once I'd seen a dropdown appear in the video I guessed to right-click and away I went.

It's Ctrl+Shift+C in the terminal to copy and Ctrl+Shift+V to paste into there.

Thanks for that. I'll probably need it a few times. Next step is to sortout networking with 2 machines running Windows 10. I tried this years ago and didn't get very far.

Hi Bear,

Want a quick fix for networking problems on those Windoze machines? Install PeppermintOS !!  ;D

Or at least test them with a live session using PeppermintOS;)

Then I'd need to sort out a virtual machine to run Garmin Express and Basecamp. I've also a lot of work produced with Adobe InDesign that afaik can't be accessed by anything else. I'm playing with Peppermint to try to get a feel for how much work a very antiquated machine can do.
I'll be posting questions in the Networking forum as that's what I'm having challenges with but I'd be grateful for a list of current command-line utilities as although smbclient works smbmount, which looked like what I need, isn't available.

I first found peppermintOne back in 2010 when I thought my 2005 Toshiba F25 AV205 was on it's last legs. Once installed, that machine was blazingly faster than it had ever been and lasted until 2017 or so before the single core Pentium M gave out.

SMB, however is a hit and miss proposition. One can rarely fathom why nor when it might connect... at least that is my experience. I'll do a search tomorrow and try to scare up a few threads for you...

I'm not sleepy it turns out, so here's a link to one of @PCNetSpec's battles with SMB and Windows 10 machines @Bear...

Thanks spence. I first met Peppermint a couple of years ago when I found PCNetSpec's article on an Acer ZG5. The thing died before I could get it to run Peppermint 8 but networking was difficult then and isn't much easier now. I've picked up a few things from the post you gave me the link to and a few more from one it referenced. I can now see inside the Windows machines and create and edit LibreOffice documents on them.  The problem is that the connections to the Windows machines are volatile: they don't survive a Peppermint reboot. I'll keep looking.

Seeing as SMB is something created and maintained by Microsoft... one might suspect some mendacity... but I didn't type that outloud..

Lemme poke around a bit more...

I am also reminded that @PCNetSpec and our esteemed @VinDSL eschew trying to eternally triage SMB and leap to something else... this might be it...

Yeah, NFS is better but I don't think you can make it work with Windurs.
