Wallpapers No Longer Function
« on: March 03, 2020, 08:30:50 pm »
My wallpapers no longer function on my Thinkpad T430i Laptop Computer. They stopped functioning about a week or so ago after installing some updates. Any Ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a little buffaloed at this. Maybe restarting the desktop environment somehow would help? The problem persist even after rebooting my Thinkpad computer.

System Specs

Lenovo Thinkpad T430i:

-- Intel Core i5 Ivybridge 3000 series CPU
-- Nvidia Optimus NV Series Integrated GPU
-- 8GB (2x 4GB Modules) PC 12800 DDR3 Memory
-- 128 GB Crucial SSD w/ 3D Nand Storage

Hi Freshpeppermint, welcome to Peppermint. Did you make any changes to the wallpaper software, install a special wallpaper application or anything like that? How long have you had Peppermint installed on your computer?
What was I thinking?

No I've not made any changes to the wallpaper software. I've had Peppermint OS installed for about 1 month or so give or take a few days. Thanks for you're reply.

Hi FreshPeppermint,

So what exactly do you mean when you say "My wallpapers no longer function"? Do you no longer have any wallpaper? Or do you have one but cannot change it?  :-\

Does running this in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/PeppermintCold.jpg"

or this:

Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/Peppermint.jpg"
result in the wallpaper changing or produce an error message? If you get an error message, what does it say?

Regards,

-- Slim

I've no wallpaper at all. I apologise it took me awhile to respond. I'll wait patiently to hear back. I realise it's not a critical issue but just an annoyance as I use my computer for work and like to have a nice wallpaper background set. It's not a huge deal but I would like it resolved. Running those commands do not yield any changes to the wallpaper at all.

Hi FreshPeppermint,

So just to clarify, you right mouse click the desktop and choose the wallpaper option.

The application opens, you click on the wallpaper of choice and click apply and nothing happens ?

Regards Zeb...

ps

for future reference, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  Don't combine the functions.  Only use one or the other  ;).  These preserve the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  Use the Preview button to see how it'll look in the forum.  I have done it for you this time :)

Hi FreshPeppermint,

Does the wallpaper show up (and is able to be changed) if you sign in to the guest account?

Also: please post the outputs from running this in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [n]emo-desktop
and also this command:

Code: [Select]
namei -nom ~/.config/dconf/user

I need to catch  a break after these remote ins and return to this and try and do this right. I'll need to be able to try and confirm it's correct. This is a brand new concept to me. I find it super practical but I gotta teach myself how to do this right.

It is also a good idea when trying to run a code suggested to you, to click on [Select] above the code and copy the highlighted code to the terminal.
What was I thinking?

Hi FreshPeppermint,

We were all new once, if you think, at anytime, we are going too fast - or not explaining ourselves correctly, please let us know.

This may sound an odd question but please roll with me on this.  If you open the Nemo file manager and go into >edit>preferences.  Are you able to change View new folders using: it usually defaults to icon view - can you change it to list view or does it ignore the request and immediately show icon view again.. in the drop down list.

i am trying to ascertain have desktop permissions become corrupted somehow and as Nemo controls the Desktop, to some extent,  in Peppermint, this will help to rule that out.

Regards Zeb...
