It would be nice if all the cities in all the countries did this and stopped relying on Microsoft...  I only wish the two or three programs I need for my business made linux versions, if they did I would have switched long ago, all my machines in my house run either linux or android, My tower is the only one running windows 7...
I have a boatload of machines too...  last count was 8 laptops, 4 tablets, and 5 towers....  17 machines and only 3 people in the house run them ...  LOL  People give me stuff and I just throw linux on it and save it for a rainy day...  :P

I'm 100% with you Robert on this one.  I really can't understand why more municipalities are not using Open-source.  Let's face it, its the average person who is footing the bill for MS's extortionate licensing fees.  Personally, I am loathed to see my taxes filling MS's coffers when there is a completely viable Open-source alternative  >:(.

Me, neither.  It seems like such a no-brainer to me too.

My cousin is a captain in our cities fire dept. I had a laugh one day he called me up and said his machine got a virus, I said what OS are they running he said XP...  I said to him you know XP is dead in the water has been for months now...  He said he is on the list for them to upgrade but they ain't got to him yet, I said ya know people knew of XP's demise a year ago why did they wait so long for to start switching you guys over...  He said you know how the city is the longer they can get out of it the better for them...  Well I said it ain't so good now that your machine is dead with a virus....  so he called the IT tech dept and told them about it...  they gave him a new machine the same day and guess what it had on it...  LOL   it wasn't Xp but they gave him Vista...  HAHAHAHAHAHA  I said to him now that just shows you how dumb the city is they gonna waste their time upgrading all the XP machines to vista and in 3 years have to do what when vista is dead upgrade em all to windows 7???  for another 3 years LOL    :P

You got that right, and it's happening everywhere too.  What you're describing seems to be the new American way.  >:(

It not just an American failing.  So many municipalities and corporations worldwide play the, "we're considering Open-source game" just to get MS to offer a better "deal".  This and the fact Windows is embossed on the public psyche as "computing".  It was a master stroke on the part of MS having the majority of computer manufactures install their product by default.  All of the pitfalls of using Windows have just become an acceptable inconvenience.

As the old adage goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" - more's the pity  :(.

Yes, I'm sure.  I remember PCNetSpec once talking about how London was considering moving over to open source and then pulling the plug at the last minute.

And here's the most bizarre thing about all of this:  From what I can tell, Linux can be easier to use than Windows, and it's a whole lot safer too.  If there's one sticking point with Linux it would be with hardware compatibility, and I don't know if this is as much of a sticking point now as it was years ago.

But, really, take Peppermint, or Lubuntu:  Either of these distributions work as well, if not better, than any Windows OS I've ever used.  Most people would really enjoy Peppermint if they ever tried it, and they'd have no more fiddling around with obnoxious antivirus programs all of the time either.

But, I've heard anti-Linux propaganda here calling Linux users communists.  And I bet the these same people calling us names are using Android phones, not even knowing they are using Linux.  And surely, their ISPs are using Linux.  Is everybody's ISP a communist service provider?  This whole anti-Linux mentality is nuts.

With anti-Linux propaganda like this, and with a proud, know-nothing public, AndyInMokum, this really is a pity.  This is why I celebrate when any large governmental, or private organization, anyplace in the world,  begins to use Linux.  It means these cities, or companies, are waking up to a better alternative, and finally using a little horse sense for a change.  :)

The "Linux is communist" brigade are easy to shoot down.  Just explain it is far more radical than meer communism.  It more in line with Anarchist philosophy - development through respect and mutual co-operation.  That generally shuts them up  >:D!!

Maybe that's why Baidu is here 24/7.  Many times it's just me and the commie bots.

But wait!  Who's in bed with whom?!?!?   ;D
