Can Cad design software run on peppermint???
« on: February 27, 2020, 09:32:37 pm »
Hi,
I would like to run windows applications on peppermint. I know it's possible for some games & other applications, but as design software are very heavy & resources consuming. Would it be possible???
Kindly guide me.

Hi vvivek,

I have not had anything to do with M$ software for over 10 years now. But I do know that people who desire to run M$ software on any linux distro need to do so in a sort of special program that has been made to do so, such as Steam or PlayOnLinux (there are others as well, but I have never done this and do not recall their names). I am, however, confident that PeppermintOS will handle anything you throw at it -- the key for such things as CAD software is the hardware you are using: lots of RAM, fast CPU, etc.  ;)

Hi vvivek, welcome to Peppermint. Why not find open source software that will do the same or similar to the Windows software? i know Freecad is available and there's also Opencad I think.
What was I thinking?

Do cracked version work on linux???
Kindly guide me.
PlayOnLinux works well. But I prefer stock Wine.

Though I have purchased games straight from the Steam store just for playing them on Peppermint, I have not thought about the non-game opticons.

If quick and easy to up and running is your goal. Then Steam OR Cross Over Office from Code Weavers are the best options.

vvivek,

Here's an article to look at from It's Foss about CAD programs for linux.  I'm also going to ask a friend of mine what CAD program he uses on his OpenSuse.

My friend suggests FreeCAD, which is opensource and Fusion 360, which is proprietary.  Is cracked versions still a 'thing'?

Hi stevesveryown,

Yes, cracked versions are still a "thing" -- a thing that PeppermintOS does not support, encourage or permit their promotion in any way or form.  ;)  Promotion of cracked software is grounds for getting banned from this forum. I do not mean you, stevesveryown, as you did not do that -- but the OP is hereby warned: we do not tolerate promotion of, or encouragement of, or help in using/installing cracked software.

If you are looking for a free application to open and modify autocad drawings in linux there is none.  Draftsight was the last one, but they stopped supporting linux on 1/1/2020.  If you go to Open Design Alliance at opendesign.com you can download ODA Drawings Explorer for Linux and this is as close as you can come.  You can open, make minor modifications, save, and print dwg files.   Otherwise you can buy ProgeCad, CMS IntelliCAD, and some others that read and write AutoCad files.  To my knowledge the other Free linux cad program out there do NOT support AutoCad files other than dxf, but not dwg which is really the industry standard for 2-d Cad.  3-d Cad is another story all together.  Hope that helps.

Thanks all for you guidance and support.
I'm new to linux, most of my works is related to windows.
Be learning industry standard design 3d software or working on design project. All are based on windows. Lately windows have frustrated me alot by 100% HDD usage.
So thought to find some alternative OS.
Linux is interesting & fast. But have limitations mostly related to design & FEA software.
I know there are free design software but those aren't industry standards.
Hope all industries support Linux soon & give users choose of OS.

Hi vvivek,

Thank you for removing the offensive part of your initial posting.  ;) 8)

It is a sad but true fact that too many industries/companies/whatever do not support Linux. But the situation is (slowly) improving.

Hi wivek,

I maybe a little late into this thread but I understand from a good friend on mine Cubiclenate that https://www.autodesk.com/campaigns/fusion-360-for-hobbyists

works under Lutris.

You should be able to find contact information for Nate on his on his webpage https://cubiclenate.com/
