[SOLVED]linux not booting up due to storage issues
« on: February 21, 2020, 11:30:14 pm »
Hello.
i conducted some updates in peppermint , as usual, but I didn't realize because of that, the partition in which I have installed is completely full. So now, my computer won't boot up, by hard drive or by live USB, so I can't rearrange the partitions , and I can't get access to my computer. And I don't know what to do. what are my options now? :(
Thank you.

Hi Ananta,

If you cannot boot into a live session USB then I think that perhaps your problem is more than just a full partition. It sounds more lke a hardware failure of some sort.  :o  Try live USB sessions of another distro or two and see if you still cannot get the machine to boot. If that problem continues then you will need to consider taking the computer to someone who knows how to check and repair the hardware.

How large is your partition?  I only had this happen to me once using a program to find files off a reformatted back up hard drive.  It found so many files it filled up my main hard drive and I had to use a live usb to delete files.

Hi...

"... won't boot up, by hard drive or by live USB..."

Make sure the Live USB is setup correctly.  if you still have the original USB that you used to install Peppermint, that one already, obviously, should boot up.  But you might have to change the boot sequence.
As mentioned above, a Live USB should be able to boot into the system and get you to look into the boot disk to make changes.  But boot sequence can change depending on the way the system has been setup by the manufacturer, and therefore make it impossible to use the Live USB without changing the sequence again.
Also as mentioned above, if you still can't start the system, then it is most likely a hardware problem that you need to fix before you can get into your boot partition.
What is your hardware?  Make and model number?

Your problem sounds like a hardware problem, could be a dead CMOS batterie or bad contacts on a memory card. If you can't even get into your computer's bios setup, then no searching for software is going to help you. Even a bad hard drive won't stop you from getting into bios setup.
What was I thinking?

Thank you all for the support. My computer somehow managed to go to grub and then go into recovery mode. Then I chose the option to free space in linux and it worked. my comp has booted, and is running. Now I need to manage my partitions from  the Live USB, which might be a challenge in itself for me Thank you all for your time and comments.

Before you boot into your LiveUSB the next time
@Ananta... make sure to make backups of all data that you can't afford to lose... then once in the LiveUSB, use gparted to resize your various partitions. I always recommend resizing only one partition at a time.

whenever in doubt, back up... and back up again...
