Reformat/ Reinstall ThinkPad R60 NO WIFI
« on: February 16, 2020, 11:01:05 pm »
OK so when I last installed on this R60, I did so using a Galaxy S8 as an Internet passthough hot spot.

That seems important because then I didn't have any trouble with the WiFi drivers. Now I do, and don't have access to that internet pass-through ability.

I have selected all upgrades for the fresh install as before (via cat5) but still no WiFi.

This laptop will exclusively depend on WiFi once installed.

Thanks again, regards.

For the life of me I did not have this issue when I had the computer set up and updated via  shared WiFi ftom my Galaxy S8.

I in ignorance downloaded hopefully revalent WiFi utilities. I'm guessing I can use a wrapper here?

Regards

Have you installed 'comitup'?:  https://is.gd/CTW9yY

It's available in Synaptic, also.

Yes. I don't know anything about it but I just downloaded it.

It should show up in some of my screen shots. It is the only signal/ driver listed but it doesn't yet work.

Interesting

I've never seen that before, so I looked it up.

Quote
'Comitup' is a software package that provides a service to establish Wifi networking on a headless computer (that is, one with no video, keyboard, or mouse).

My take on it is; it's a utility for headless computers that uses wifi to connect to an already established wifi connection, when it boots.

I'm scratching my head, trying to figure out how that bootstrap wifi utility got installed  :-\

It might be conflicting with the Intel wifi driver; but that's just a guess.

I'll get rid of it. I thought some hot spot features sounded cool. But just no...

 :-\ :-\   :-[

All of the commands to copy the driver and load it in the /lib/firmware location as prescribed in the above link went fine. They all ended without error.

But the first two modprobe commands while error free didn't change anything. Just the OP of the mentioned post at "Ask Ubuntu" had similar issues. So I continued to the second two commands

They also ended with out error. Again noting changed. So I did not enter the last command to make the listed reload experiment.

I am totally lost. Regards.

So here I just said that I downloaded/ copied and loaded the 3945. Or tried and thought I loaded it.

But ls in /lib/firmware found this??

When I searched on this I found numerous Debian links.  VinDSL, do you think that adding this driver from the Debian proper repository would be okay?

I did install the .deb file, but the modprobe didn't work.

I don't know what else to do. For now, USB tether will have to do.

I can't consider this solved until the WiFi is fixed.

I ended up using a Panda Wireless USB.

But it disconnects and does not easily reconnect after logging out or switching users.
