Peppermint 10 issues with RTL8723DE
« on: January 24, 2020, 07:09:28 pm »
Another person trying to get Linux working on an HP laptop!

I am running a dual boot with  Peppermint 10 and WIndows 10. and I consistently get what looks like a low signal on wi-fi in Linux, looks good on Windows.

Peppermint was loaded fresh within the last couple of days, and driver was downloaded and installed today.

Speedtest.net shows similar upload and ping times between Windows and Peppermint, but download speeds are about 12 mbps in Linux, and 80+ mbps in Windows.

I have also had the Linux connection drop completely a few times.

I have tried two different things I found in searches here.  Running a command then editing /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723de.conf

options rtl8723be ant_sel=2
options rtl8723be ant_sel=1 swenc=Y fwlps=0 ips=0

I even tried combining the two (my current configuration):

options rtl8723be ant_sel=2 swenc=Y fwlps=0 ips=0

I rebooted after changes to make sure they took effect.

They all perform similarly.

Any thoughts on what I should try?

Here is the info from the requested commands:

Hmmmmm.....

Try downloading the rtl8723be files from the following link, put them in the /etc/firmware/rtlwifi directory (create it if it doesn't exist), and reboot your system.

https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/tree/master/firmware/rtlwifi

After that, recheck and see if it's any better.

Thanks for the info.

I grabbed the 2 firmware files. tried them together. one at a time. and with/without the modprode settings... no difference.

After some more poking around I decided to just buy a Panda USB wifi dongle that just works on payday.

So my somewhat related question is once I get the dongle, and set the wifi connection to use the new connection, is it helpful to remove the RTL driver?  I don't use Bluetooth on my system, but I may want to in the future...

The OS kernel shouldn't be using the driver for the new hardware so it shouldn't matter if it's there or not. That said, personally I would remove it just to have a clean system.
